[The Fact|Reporter Park Ji Yoon] The film “28 Years Later: Post-Apocalyptic” got off to a flying start, rising to No. 1 at the box office on its opening day.

According to data from the Korean Film Commission’s Integrated Ticket Management System on June 20, “28 Years Later: Post-Apocalyptic” (directed by Danny Boyle) attracted 56,678 viewers on June 19, taking the top spot at the box office.

On the first day of release, the film not only topped the box office but also set a record for the highest opening weekend in 2025 for horror films and films with a limited youth age, signaling an upcoming box office fever.

“28 Years Later: Post-Apocalyptic” is set in a post-apocalyptic setting, when a virus that broke out 28 years ago plunged the world into chaos. The main character is a boy named Spike (played by Alfie Williams), born and raised on Holy Island – a place completely isolated from the outside world. Leaving the island for the first time, Spike sets foot on the main land ravaged by the virus, where he faces infected creatures that have evolved – bringing extreme horror. The film is a sequel to “28 Days Later” (2003) – a work that changed the entire definition of “fast-running zombies” and reshaped the global zombie film genre.

“How to Train Your Dragon” (director Dean DeBlois) ranked second with 20,242 viewers, bringing the total revenue to 1,070,399 viewers. The film tells the story of Hiccup (played by Mason Thames) - a boy who is not accepted by the Viking community because of his different appearance and personality, and his journey to befriend the legendary dragon Toothless to overcome prejudice, creating a magical friendship that changes the world.

“Hi-Five” (director Kang Hyoung Chul) ranked third with 19,958 viewers; “Elio” reached 17,047 viewers and ranked fourth; “Shinmyeong” (director Kim Nam Gyoon) reached 11,139 viewers, holding the fifth position.
