Shoo, a former member of the girl group S.E.S., recently opened up about her struggles with gambling debts. On the 8th, she launched her YouTube channel ″Human That’s Shoo,″ where she released a video titled ″The Controversial Incident... I’ll Tell You Everything Today.″ The video features Shoo, her husband Lim Hyo-seong, a former professional basketball player, and the production team discussing her past issues.
In the video, Shoo candidly addressed her gambling controversy, stating, ″I never explained it in any article. Ultimately, I did gamble.″ She recounted an experience in Las Vegas where she met someone who spoke Korean, which led her to start gambling through an acquaintance. ″Whenever she called, she always received money. She was part of a crew, but I didn’t know. The prosecutor later said it was a set-up,″ she explained.
Reflecting on her mindset at the time, Shoo admitted, ″I was so naive about the world. I thought, ’This is life,’ as I considered how I had ruined myself.″ She also mentioned that after some time, she approached the Gambling Addiction Prevention Association to become an ambassador, hoping to raise awareness about the dangers of gambling.
Shoo revealed that she had never had a proper conversation with Lim Hyo-seong about her struggles before. Lim shared that they were already facing difficulties in their relationship when he received a call from her about needing money. ″It was after he retired and wasn’t making much money,″ he explained. Shoo recalled, ″He called and said he owed 250 million won. I thought about it for a day, borrowed it from friends, and paid it back immediately. But he didn’t pay for another two days.″
Lim Hyo-seong expressed that Shoo was in such a tough place that he even contemplated death. He shared, ″The first thing Suga said when she woke up was, ’I don’t know what I mean to you, but I hope you live well.’″ Hearing this, Shoo became emotional. Lim added, ″I told Sooyoung (Suga) that I hope she doesn’t embellish herself in front of others and act cowardly. It was her choice and her mistake.″
Suga tearfully acknowledged her past, saying, ″It’s true that I ruined everything. I’m so sorry to our children. I’m trying to live my life diligently now.″ Lim consoled her, reminding her that everyone makes mistakes and that it was commendable she faced her issues head-on. ″You’ve paid the price,″ he reassured her.
Suga debuted with S.E.S. in 1997 alongside Bada and Eugene, and the group disbanded in 2002. In 2010, she married Lim Hyo-seong, and they have one son and two daughters. Lim was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years, for gambling approximately 790 million won in Macau and other locations between August 2016 and May 2018. He has since started a food-related business and resumed his broadcasting career.
