JTBC’s ’Esquire’, the secret behind its 9% viewership ratings


Lee Jin-wook takes a stand against child abuse in the latest episode of JTBC’s weekend drama ″Esquire: Lawyers Who Dream of Becoming Lawyers.″ In Episode 4, which aired on the 10th, Yoon Seok-hoon, portrayed by Lee Jin-wook, employs a strategic approach to confront a child abuser.

The drama has garnered significant attention, breaking its own viewership record with a 9% rating in the Seoul metropolitan area and 8.3% nationwide, according to Nielsen Korea’s data on paid households. The peak viewership reached an impressive 10.2% in the Seoul area, reinforcing its status as the leading weekend miniseries.

In this episode, Yoon Seok-hoon is tasked with managing the legal issues of Choi Cheol-min, played by Do Sang-woo, the CEO of a fund company facing child abuse allegations. Concerned about the potential fallout for his company, Choi requests that Yoon discreetly resolve the matter with his housekeeper. However, Kang Hyo-min, portrayed by Jung Chae-yeon, uncovers troubling evidence of repeated abuse when she investigates and learns that the child had been hidden away.

As the situation escalates, the housekeeper threatens to demand money, and a criminal record for fraud and theft comes to light. In a tense confrontation, Yoon Seok-hoon pressures the housekeeper to sign a waiver against false reporting. Disillusioned by his approach, Kang Hyo-min decides to take matters into her own hands and report Choi Cheol-min.

Yoon Seok-hoon explains his decision to suppress his emotions, noting Choi’s history of anger issues and the risk it poses to the child. However, the narrative takes a dramatic turn when Choi is summoned by the police and admits to the assault. In a moment of frustration, Yoon Seok-hoon punches him, remarking, ″Even a guy like you can become a parent.″

The episode also reveals that Yoon had previously leaked information about Choi’s embezzlement to the child’s guardian, leading to Choi experiencing the same pain he inflicted. ″Esquire″ airs every Saturday at 10:40 PM and Sunday at 10:30 PM on JTBC.
