Director Tim Burton recently held a press conference to announce Season 2 of the Netflix series ″Wednesday.″ The event took place at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul in Jongno-gu, where he remarked, ″The word ’ordinary’ is strange,″ and added, ″Everyone has felt unique at some point. Being a little strange can be normal.″ Burton emphasized that this series is his first, a project he has spearheaded, showcasing his distinctive world filled with bizarre, fairytale-like stories about eccentric characters.
″Wednesday″ follows the story of Wednesday Addams, a girl with hallucinations who enrolls at Nevermore Academy, a school for eccentrics, to solve mysterious cases. Since its debut in 2022, the series has amassed 1.7 billion hours of cumulative viewing, making it the highest-grossing English-language TV show on Netflix. Overall, it ranks second among all titles, trailing only behind ″Squid Game.″
Burton shared insights about the creative process, stating, ″I made Season 1 without knowing if it would be a success. If I had overanalyzed the factors for its success, it wouldn’t have turned out well.″ He continued, ″I also made Season 2 following my heart, working hard to maintain its identity.″ He stressed the importance of individuality in storytelling, cautioning against creating a show that feels like a manufactured product.
Season 2 is split into two parts, with Part 1 released on the 6th and currently ranking first in viewership across 92 countries, excluding Korea. Burton noted, ″This season delves deeply into the family narrative,″ particularly focusing on the dynamics between Wednesday, her mother Morticia, and her maternal grandmother Hester Frump.
Jenna Ortega, who portrays Wednesday, expressed, ″A girl who knows how to speak up honestly and confidently is truly lovable. We all deserve to be loved.″ Emma Myers, who plays Enid, added, ″She’s lovable because she’s eccentric and unique. She symbolizes being who I am and not having to conform to the world’s standards.″
The ″Skull Tree″ episode in Part 1 features stop-motion animation reminiscent of Burton’s earlier work, ″Corpse Bride.″ He commented, ″I love traditional animation with its vibrant texture. I believe stop-motion animation, completed by human touch, is true creativity and art. I want to continue that spirit in the age of AI.″
Regarding the success of Season 1, Burton remained unfazed by comparisons to ″Squid Game.″ Ortega remarked, ″It’s not good to view movies or dramas as competition. I’m grateful that Korean fans are watching a TV show created by a Californian like me. It’s important to connect with fans around the world.″ Burton added, “I have experienced both success and failure, and I am grateful that people around the world are watching the work I put so much effort into.”
