AOA’s Choa’s Confession: ’I Needed Courage to Be Happy’

Choa revealed the reasons behind her departure from AOA during the premiere of the E Channel and Channel S entertainment program ″Playful Sister″ on the 28th. In her detailed explanation, she shared her journey and the challenges she faced while being part of the group, alongside fellow guests Chae Rina, Lee Ji-hye, Ivy, and Narsha.

After five years with AOA, Choa left the group at the age of 21. She expressed, ″Since I debuted later than others, I felt a strong pressure to succeed. However, the standards for what ’success’ meant seemed endless.″ She reflected on her sacrifices, stating, ″I wore higher heels, dyed my hair yellow, and gave up personal things to focus on my career. Even after winning first place again, it felt empty.″ Choa emphasized the difficulty of continually reinventing oneself, admitting, ″I think I gave up because I felt that my efforts were viewed negatively.″

Opening up about her emotions at the time of her departure, Choa said, ″It seemed natural for someone to leave if they were unhappy, but I realized it took courage to seek happiness, so I made the decision to leave.″ She added, ″Looking back, I appreciate that people liked the image I worked hard to create, but I wasn’t truly living in the moment.″

During the show, Narsha recalled that Brown Eyed Girls’ promotions for ″Abracadabra″ coincided with Roo’ra’s album preparations, where Chae Rina is a member. Chae Rina reminisced, ″We were practicing in the dance studio at that time. The song was called ’Going Going,’ and you guys had your comeback first.″ She noted the significant impact of that moment.

Ivy shared insights about her family background, saying, ″My mother was a vocalist, and my father was a drummer. I naturally sang and practiced in front of the mirror.″ She revealed, ″Initially, I wanted to be a ballad singer, but about a year before my debut, I met Park Jin-young and shifted my focus to dance music.″

Reflecting on her experiences with the groups Diva and Roo’ra, Chae Rina commented, ″I believe girl groups face unique challenges. It’s a collective of friends with strong personalities. We’re genuinely kind-hearted, but misunderstandings arose during simultaneous promotions, leading to some time apart.″ She expressed gratitude for their current good relations, saying, ″It brings tears to my eyes to see them now.″

ChoA discussed the dynamics within AOA, stating, ″We never fought. I don’t recall us ever complaining, even in casual conversations.″ In contrast, Lee Ji-hye explained, ″If you hold back and then let it all out, you end up like us.″ She acknowledged Chae Rina’s support during her difficult times after the disbandment of her group Sharp, saying, ″Chae Rina was there for me when I needed someone.″

Chae Rina also recalled a significant incident from 2012, sharing, ″Before I married my husband, Lee Ji-hye reached out to me after I had a serious accident. She assured me she was there for me and encouraged me to reach out whenever I needed help.″ Lee Ji-hye affirmed, ″That sentiment has never changed.″

Through the program, Choa openly discussed her departure and the emotions surrounding it, while also highlighting the camaraderie and support among the cast members. Their shared experiences underscored the importance of their mutual connections.
