’Ema’ captivates audiences with its story of strong women’s solidarity.

The Netflix series ″Aema″ premiered on August 22nd, set against the backdrop of the rise of Korean erotic films in the 1980s. The story revolves around top star Jung Hee-ran and rookie actress Joo-ae, exploring their intertwined lives in a transformative era.

One of the standout features of ″Aema″ is its reimagining of the 1980s Korean film scene. Director Lee Hae-young aimed to highlight the brutality and contradictions of that time. He expressed his desire for the film to resonate with audiences, stating that he hoped the story and the mise-en-scène would feel fresh and relatable.

Another significant aspect is the solidarity between women facing the absurdities of their reality. Initially, Jung Hee-ran and Joo-ae are at odds, but as they navigate the irrationality and oppression of their era, their relationship evolves into a deep bond. The director intended to depict the narrative of two women resisting oppression and the system, emphasizing that their moment of unity symbolizes their shared destiny under the name ″Aema.″

The chemistry between the actors also stands out, as they embody the spirit of the era convincingly. Lee Ha-nui takes on the role of the accomplished actress Jung Hee-ran, delivering a commanding performance, while Bang Hyo-rin brings energy and boldness to the character of Joo-ae. Jin Seon-kyu plays Gu Joong-ho, the head of the ″Aema Madam″ production company, and Jo Hyun-chul portrays rookie director Kwak In-woo, each showcasing their personal desires and conflicts. Their interactions reflect the intense atmosphere of the 1980s film industry.

The production video for ″Aema,″ released earlier, captured attention for its recreation of the 1980s Chungmuro film set while incorporating modern elements. The film is now available for streaming on Netflix.
