Demon Slayer: Mugen Train surpasses 3 million viewers in just 10 days after release

The Japanese animation "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train" set a record for the fastest box office success by surpassing 3 million viewers within ten days of its release. According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system on the morning of the 1st, "Demon Slayer" attracted 285,020 viewers in a single day, maintaining its position as the number one box office hit. The cumulative audience reached 3,154,070.

"Demon Slayer" was released on the 22nd of last month and depicts the final battle between the Demon Slayer Corps and the elite demons at the Infinity Castle, the demons' stronghold. This work covers the first chapter of the original manga's final three-part battle series. Before its release, it faced criticism for allegedly glorifying Japanese militarism because the protagonist wears earrings shaped like the Rising Sun flag, and the Demon Slayer Corps resembles the Japanese military student corps during World War II. However, despite these controversies, its box office momentum continues.

"Demon Slayer" recorded the highest pre-sale tickets and opening score among this year's releases and set new records for reaching 1 million viewers in 2 days, 2 million in 5 days, and 3 million in 10 days, securing the top spot at the box office. It surpassed the 2.22 million viewers attracted by its predecessor, "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train" (2021), in just six days, proving the strength of its fandom once again.

Additionally, "Demon Slayer" exceeded the record of 3.01 million viewers set by "Howl's Moving Castle" (2004), ranking fourth in the all-time domestic box office for Japanese animation. The Japanese voice actors' visit event on the 30th of last month also concluded successfully, further heightening the enthusiasm of the fandom.

In Japan, "Demon Slayer" attracted 19.82 million viewers over 38 days and earned 28 billion yen in box office revenue, ranking third in Japan's all-time box office records. As of 8 a.m. on the 1st, it holds an overwhelming lead with nearly a 50% reservation rate and ticket sales reaching 140,000.

Currently, the second place at the box office is "Zombie Daughter," starring Jo Jung-suk, which attracted 78,596 viewers on the same day, with a cumulative audience of 5,349,786. "Zombie Daughter" has become the highest-grossing release of the year. The third place is "F1 The Movie," with 68,654 viewers and a cumulative audience of 4,761,222.

If the box office momentum of "Demon Slayer" continues, it is likely to surpass 4 million viewers this weekend in its third week, potentially challenging the 5 million viewer milestone set by "Zombie Daughter." The current box office trend reaffirms the strong fandom in the animation market.
