BoA's older brother Kwon Soon-wook remembered for his strong will despite battling illness


It has been four years since Kwon Soon-wook, the late older brother of singer BoA and a music video director, passed away. Kwon Soon-wook ended his life at the age of 39 on September 5, 2021, after battling peritoneal cancer. In May of the same year, he revealed his illness, stating, "I have cancer in the peritoneum, and it is stage 4 due to metastasis. The prognosis is not good, and hospitals are saying I have 2 to 3 months to live." Despite his battle with cancer, Kwon Soon-wook did not lose hope and said, "I want to believe in a miracle. I am grateful to everyone who has allowed me to dream of a miracle one last time."

Throughout his illness, his younger sister BoA was always by his side. BoA sent warm encouragement to her brother, saying, "Oppa, I love you. We can overcome this. I will definitely cook ramen for you. We have to eat it together." She also added, "Oppa, you are truly a strong person. The most handsome and strong person in my eyes. Thank you for staying strong every day," encouraging Kwon Soon-wook. However, four months later, Kwon Soon-wook ultimately passed away.

Mourning Kwon Soon-wook's death, BoA said, "Our last conversation was 'I love you.' Thank you for leaving such warm words. Now, I am waiting for you to do everything you want without pain. Forget all the hard times and protect me and our family from a place without suffering." Her words carry deep sorrow and longing.

Kwon Soon-wook also built a meaningful career as a music video director. He made his directorial debut with Poppin Hyun Joon's "Roar," and later showcased his unique and artistic directing style through various works such as Girl's Day's "Twinkle Twinkle," MAMAMOO's "Piano Man," and BoA's "Only One" and "Kiss My Lips."
