Netflix 'Kedeheon' OST, Long-term Reign at the Top of the Billboard Hot 100

The original soundtrack (OST) "Golden" from the Netflix animation "K-Pop Demon Hunters" is breaking records on the U.S. Billboard charts. The song has held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 main song chart for five consecutive weeks. Billboard reported on the September 20 chart that "'Golden' maintained its top position following the previous week," announcing its fifth week at No. 1.

"Golden" is one of the only K-pop songs to have held the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 for more than five weeks, alongside BTS's "Butter." The "K-Pop Demon Hunters" OST also reached the top of the Billboard 200, the main album chart, marking the first time in about three and a half years since the 2022 animation "Encanto" that an album has simultaneously topped both charts. This is also the first time since BTS's 2020 album BE and its title track "Life Goes On" that a K-pop album has simultaneously held No. 1 on both major charts.

The Billboard Hot 100 chart ranks songs based on a combination of U.S. streaming data, radio airplay, and sales figures. During the chart tracking period, "Golden" recorded 33.8 million streams in the U.S., a 2% decrease from the previous week. Radio audience impressions increased by 19% to 26.39 million, while sales dropped 11% to 8,000 copies. Notably, "Golden" has recorded over 30 million streams for six consecutive weeks and has held the No. 1 spot on the streaming song chart for eight consecutive weeks. Its position on the radio song chart rose from 24th to 20th.

"Golden" has set a record in the 67-year history of the Billboard Hot 100 as the longest-running No. 1 song performed by an animated character. It surpassed "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies and "The Chipmunk Song" by David Seville and The Chipmunks, both of which held the top spot for four consecutive weeks. Additionally, it set the third-longest record for a No. 1 song performed by a female group on the Hot 100. The song ranks alongside Destiny's Child's "Independent Women Part 1" (11 weeks), TLC's "Waterfalls" (7 weeks), and The Emotions' "Best of My Love" (4 weeks).

Beyond "Golden," the overall popularity of the "K-Pop Demon Hunters" OST stands out. This animation OST made history as the first to have four songs simultaneously enter the Hot 100 top 10. Currently, the top 10 includes "Golden" (No. 1), "Your Idol" by Lion Boys (No. 4), "Soda Pop" (No. 5), and "How It's Done" by Huntrix (No. 8).

These achievements are seen as further proof of K-pop's global popularity. K-pop has a vast fan base worldwide, and the success of "K-Pop Demon Hunters" demonstrates how the combination of animation and music can create new markets.

Netflix is widely promoting the appeal of K-pop through "K-Pop Demon Hunters," which is interpreted as a positive outcome of the fusion between K-pop and animation. The success of "Golden" will provide opportunities for K-pop artists to actively engage in various genres and media in the future.

The global expansion of K-pop continues to grow, and the "K-Pop Demon Hunters" OST has become part of this trend. The success of this animation will serve as a catalyst to further broaden the possibilities of K-pop.
