Jun Ji-hyun's agency completely denies rumors of canceling Chinese commercial shoot

Actress Jun Ji-hyun denied allegations that her Chinese advertisement shoot was canceled due to the anti-China controversy surrounding the Disney Plus original series "Polaris." Her agency, Peach Company, stated on the 23rd, "The claim that Jun Ji-hyun's Chinese advertisement shoot was canceled is unfounded."

According to the agency, Jun Ji-hyun was preparing for an advertisement shoot for a Chinese clothing brand scheduled to take place on the 25th at a location in Seoul. However, Sports Donga reported that the shoot was completely canceled as the anti-China controversy over "Polaris" intensified.

In "Polaris," Jun Ji-hyun's character Seo Moon-joo sparked backlash from Chinese local fans with the line, "Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall on the border area." This remark drew criticism among Chinese netizens for "distorting the image of China as a peace-seeking country."

Peach Company explained, "It is true that the scheduled event and advertisement shoot were postponed, but they were not canceled," adding, "The postponement was decided before the release of 'Polaris' due to local circumstances."

"Polaris" tells the story of Moon-joo (played by Jun Ji-hyun), who has gained international fame as a UN ambassador and pursues the truth behind the assassination attempt on a presidential candidate. The drama consists of nine episodes, with two episodes released every Wednesday following the premiere on the 10th.

Jun Ji-hyun gained high popularity in the Chinese-speaking region after the success of SBS's "My Love from the Star" in 2014. However, the current anti-China controversy surrounding "Polaris" has affected her advertising activities.

The agency emphasized, "The cancellation of this advertisement was settled before the drama aired," and added, "There was a misunderstanding due to overlapping issues."

Meanwhile, "Polaris" depicts the process in which Moon-joo, who has international renown, confronts a huge truth threatening the Korean Peninsula alongside Sanho (played by Kang Dong-won), a special agent of unknown nationality. This drama is a thriller set against political tension, highlighting Jun Ji-hyun's acting skills.

Chinese netizens have offered various interpretations of the lines and scenes in the drama. In particular, criticism has continued regarding Moon-joo's lines and the slum scenes filmed in Hong Kong, which were set in Dalian. Additionally, the scene where a carpet with five-star patterns is stepped on has been interpreted as "an insult to the flag symbolizing China."

Since Disney Plus is not officially available in China, there are also criticisms that Chinese netizens are causing controversy by "illegally watching" the series.

Despite the controversy, Jun Ji-hyun is showing a strong presence as the lead in "Polaris," and attention is focused on her future activities.
