Actor Lee Byung-hun candidly spoke about his first meeting with director Park Chan-wook. On the 24th, Lee Byung-hun and director Park Chan-wook reunited after 25 years since their connection through the film Joint Security Area (JSA) on the tvN variety show You Quiz on the Block. The two reminisced about past memories and had a deep conversation.
Recalling their first meeting, Lee Byung-hun said, "My second movie failed, and we were having a technical screening for my third movie, The World of Us. The assistant director told me that a director was waiting outside, so I went out." He described Park's appearance, saying, "He was wearing a coat, had a horsehair hairstyle, and was holding a script. Just by looking at him, I felt a strong dislike. I greeted him thinking, 'He really is unlikable.'"
Director Park Chan-wook later offered Lee a project, but Lee declined at the time. Lee explained, "When I was about to finish my military service, I read a script my manager brought me, and it was so interesting that I really wanted to do it. Only then did I realize it was a work by director Park Chan-wook." He emphasized that the script captivated his heart.
Reflecting on their first meeting, Lee said, "Looking back, it seemed the director was worried about what to do if he quit directing," mentioning an anecdote about a kimbap shop. He said, "He ate the kimchi kimbap my mother packed and seriously asked, 'If you open the first store, can you give me the second one?' It showed how precarious the situation was back then."
Director Park admitted, "I thought if my third work failed, I wouldn't have another chance, so I even considered starting a business," acknowledging the anxiety of his unknown days. The two shared their difficult times and formed a deep bond.
On the show, Lee Byung-hun emphasized an honest attitude, saying, "A person shouldn't be different in front and behind." He talked about how their relationship continued after their first meeting and recalled the hard times of the past.
Director Park candidly revealed, "During tough times, I was jealous and cursed a lot when I saw colleagues doing well." He said he had a group called 'Pride and Gossip' with directors Bong Joon-ho, Ryu Seung-wan, Jang Joon-hwa, and Kim Ji-woon. They gathered as people going through hard times to talk about each other's films and vent their frustrations.
Lee Byung-hun drew a line when asked about gossip, saying, "I'm not like that." He reiterated his belief that "a person shouldn't be different in front and behind." The two first met 25 years ago through Joint Security Area (JSA) and have since watched each other's paths and grown.
The conversation between Lee Byung-hun and director Park Chan-wook became an opportunity to reflect on past hardships and the bond that blossomed within them. They reaffirmed how much their presence meant to each other and expressed anticipation for their future endeavors.
