Comedy Legend Jeon Yu-seong Passes Away... Farewelled with a Comedian's Funeral

Comedian Lee Kyung-sil mourned the late Jeon Yu-seong. On the 26th, Lee Kyung-sil posted on her personal SNS, "Our comedy and gag industry's great elder brother has passed away." Lee Kyung-sil recalled, "After finishing the Wednesday recording, it was raining heavily, but thinking it would be too late if I didn't go now, I left around 2 p.m. and arrived at Jeonbuk National University Hospital around 5:30 p.m., where I was able to see my brother."

In the hospital room were Jeon Yu-seong's family and junior comedian Kim Shin-young. Lee Kyung-sil said, "Shin-young was staying by my brother, who was like a professor, frequently changing his wet towel. As a disciple, I found her attitude very admirable and grateful."

Jeon Yu-seong did not lose his humor even in his final moments. Lee Kyung-sil said, "My brother was lying down with his patient gown pants rolled up and on oxygen. I joked, 'Our brother is lying down so sexy,' and he responded, 'I'm doing this so you all can see,' with a smile."

Lee Kyung-sil also shared a brief but deep conversation with Jeon Yu-seong. He said, "Kyung-sil, thank you for coming. I am always proud of you all. Stay healthy." She replied, "We always felt reassured because you were here. And I was always thankful that you called first to check on us."

Lee Kyung-sil confessed, "I cried seeing him trying to say even one more word. To hide my reddened eyes, I wiped my brother's hands with a wet towel." She added, "Prayer came naturally, and it was heartbreaking to see him struggling to breathe."

She concluded, "At 9:05 p.m. last night, I received the news that my brother had passed away peacefully. Brother, you worked so hard. Your life was truly wonderful and great. Now, don't be in pain anymore, and rest in peace."

Jeon Yu-seong passed away at 9:05 p.m. on the 25th at the age of 76. He had recently been receiving treatment at Jeonbuk National University Hospital due to worsening symptoms of pneumothorax. His daughter, Jebi, was by his side at the time of his passing. The funeral hall has been set up at Seoul Asan Hospital, and the funeral will be held as a comedian's funeral.

Following the news of Jeon Yu-seong's death, condolences poured in from junior comedians and colleagues. Jo Hye-ryun said, "I was grateful to hold Yu-seong oppa's hand and pray earnestly, and at the end of the prayer, oppa said 'Amen,' for which I was thankful." She added, "Many colleagues and juniors prayed for oppa for a long time, and finally, those prayers were answered. Now oppa has gone to heaven and is starting a new beginning, not an end."

Comedian Park Joon-hyung recalled, "In June, there was an event to create a bookshelf at Namsan Library with books written by comedians. It was senior Jeon Yu-seong's idea." He said, "I remember at that official event, he asked me to hold his hand because he felt dizzy, and I supported him throughout his speech. His hands were thin and emaciated, but his spirit and humor while speaking were truly remarkable."

Born in 1949, Jeon Yu-seong debuted as a broadcast writer and comedian in 1969 with TBC's "Jeon Yu-seong's Show Show Show." He later gained much love through KBS2's "Humor No. 1" and "Show Video Jockey," among others. Last year, he appeared on several broadcasts revealing that he had been hospitalized due to acute pneumonia, arrhythmia, and COVID-19.

Jeon Yu-seong's death has delivered a great shock to the comedy world, and his humor and talent will be remembered for a long time.
