Ko Hyun-jung's passionate performance... Drama 'Praying Mantis' rises to number one

SBS drama 'The Mantis: The Killer's Outing' is generating significant buzz among viewers. The drama centers on Jeong I-shin (Go Hyun-jung), a serial killer who brutally murdered six men 23 years ago. It begins with a scene where Jeong I-shin, holding a red apple, stares at Detective Choi Jung-ho (Jo Sung-ha) before confessing to the crimes. The story unfolds around Jeong I-shin's reunion with her son Cha Soo-yeol (Jang Dong-yoon).

Jeong I-shin is a serial killer imprisoned for brutally murdering men who committed crimes against women and children. She is released from prison after 23 years to assist in investigating copycat crimes and reunites with her son, who has become a detective. Despite its divisive theme, the crime thriller has received positive viewer responses. In episode 4, it recorded a nationwide viewership rating of 7.5%, establishing itself as the strongest Friday-Saturday drama. Additionally, it achieved the number one spot domestically on Netflix.

Jeong I-shin's complex maternal love and feelings toward her son heighten the drama's tension. Journalists have offered various interpretations of why Jeong I-shin volunteered to cooperate with the investigation. One reporter said, "Jeong I-shin likely had a strong desire to see her son, whom she hadn't seen for a long time, even just once." Another explained, "She is not a character devoid of maternal love," adding, "Jeong I-shin set the condition that her son be protected."

Cha Soo-yeol learns that Jeong I-shin once requested a new identity to protect him and visits her with Yirgacheffe coffee, which she likes. However, he expresses complex emotions upon hearing news of her escape. This mother-son relationship is a central theme of the drama, with journalists praising its dramatic portrayal of the love-hate relationship between parent and child.

Go Hyun-jung's acting stands out as a major strength of the drama. Reporters described her as "the embodiment of a psychopath," portraying brutal murder methods with composure, and noted a significant difference in tension between scenes with and without her presence. On the other hand, Jang Dong-yoon, playing Cha Soo-yeol, received criticism for awkward acting in emotionally heightened scenes.

There are also criticisms regarding the drama's progression. Journalists pointed out that the police investigation skills, a core element of the crime story, are clumsy and hinder immersion. For example, the plot where the kidnapped victim at the hospital is not found was deemed unrealistic. Additionally, some criticized that Jeong I-shin's overwhelming presence overshadows other main and supporting characters.

Director Byun Young-joo, known for consistently voicing human rights issues, reveals her intent through the inclusion of a segment explaining transgender Eddie's gender confirmation surgery. Although the drama is unusually short with only eight episodes, many viewers feel the pacing is slow.

Changes in the drama production environment are also noteworthy. As fewer viewers watch live broadcasts and production costs increase, the drama production methods are evolving. Journalists noted a trend toward more sensational and shorter dramas, analyzing this as a choice aligned with viewer preferences.

These diverse opinions enrich the discussion surrounding the drama 'The Mantis.' The drama effectively captures the characteristics of the crime thriller genre and attracts viewers' attention. With two episodes remaining until the finale, the development of the story and relationships between characters are drawing even more focus.
