President Lee Jae-myung and First Lady Kim Hye-kyung appeared on the JTBC variety show "Please Take Care of My Refrigerator," which aired on the 6th. The program was conducted under the theme "Chuseok Special, Please Take Care of K-Food," and the two introduced Korea's seasonal agricultural and marine products as well as traditional Chuseok dishes. President Lee greeted viewers by saying, "When you think of Chuseok, the first thing that comes to mind is abundance. I hope all our citizens have a joyful Chuseok."
First Lady Kim shared an episode about having meals even during a couple's quarrel. MC Kim Sung-joo asked, "I heard that even when you fight, you eat in the middle and then continue fighting. Is that true?" Kim replied, "If we don't eat on time while fighting intensely, we forget why we were fighting and later argue about why the meal wasn't prepared." President Lee demonstrated by saying, "I throw the rice and side dish containers like this."
Kim revealed that President Lee has a habit of writing long letters when they have a quarrel. She added, "They were mostly letters of apology," and President Lee admitted, "I fight because I'm at fault," which brought laughter. During the broadcast, Kim mentioned that President Lee is skilled at filleting fish dishes, showing his affectionate side. However, she explained, "He says it's messy and inefficient when I do it." President Lee defended himself by saying, "I approach it anatomically."
President Lee stated that his appearance on the show was intended to promote K-Food. He emphasized, "Our country's culture is an asset. Among them, K-pop and dramas are important, but the real core is food," highlighting the sustainability of food as an industry. He selected dried radish greens as a "K ingredient to promote worldwide" and said, "If we label the origin as 'Korea,' we can export it as much as we want."
President Lee named "dried radish greens braised with mackerel" as his favorite dish prepared by First Lady Kim. He said, "Dried radish greens are nostalgic food, delicious, and a healthy dish rich in vitamins." He also introduced various Korean ingredients such as napa cabbage, deodeok, soybeans, and shiitake mushrooms, adding, "Napa cabbage is really a great food. Kimchi goes without saying, and it's also good to make pancakes with napa cabbage."
First Lady Kim mentioned her recent experience making kimbap with children during her visit to New York, USA, saying, "In foreign countries, Asian food has long been represented by 'sushi,' but now everyone confidently says 'kimbap.'" Light-hearted jokes were exchanged during the broadcast. When the host said, "You eat in the middle even when you fight," Kim agreed, saying, "Even when fighting, sometimes the reason for the fight is forgotten, and not having a meal becomes the cause of the fight."
Political circles raised criticism over President Lee's appearance on the show. Joo Jin-woo, a member of the People Power Party, claimed, "President Lee filmed the show during an unprecedented situation when the National Intelligence Resources Management Agency's fire caused a network outage." He added, "The presidential office knew that filming a variety show was inappropriate under the circumstances and even threatened legal action to hide the filming date."
In response, the presidential office denied Joo's claims, calling them "clear falsehoods." Spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung emphasized, "The presidential office informs that it is considering legal action against the act of spreading false information and politicizing a national crisis with baseless suspicions." Later, President Lee's schedule was released on the presidential office website, showing that after the fire, he chaired an emergency countermeasure meeting before proceeding with the show's recording.
Despite the schedule disclosure, the People Power Party continued their full-scale attack. Joo criticized, "This is the first case where an emergency response meeting was postponed for a variety show. What's more important, the refrigerator or the network?" Jang Dong-hyuk, the party leader, claimed, "The president's 48-hour whereabouts were ultimately a lie," adding, "The public is not curious about the contents of President Lee Jae-myung and his wife's refrigerator but about what is on the president's mind."
Despite political controversy, President Lee and First Lady Kim's appearance on the variety show served as an opportunity to highlight the importance of K-Food. Through the broadcast, President Lee emphasized the strengths of Korean cuisine and expressed his determination to help Korean food gain global recognition.
