Cho Yong-pil returns to the TV stage after 28 years... Achieves a 15.7% viewership rating with an emotional performance of 29 songs

On the 6th, Cho Yong-pil made his return to the TV stage after 28 years on the KBS special concert "Cho Yong-pil, Forever This Moment." This concert was planned to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation, featuring about 30 hit songs performed over two and a half hours. The broadcast recorded an average nationwide viewership rating of 15.7%, with a peak minute rating of 18.2%. This was the highest rating among the Chuseok special music concert programs aired by the three terrestrial broadcasters during the holiday period.

This concert was a recording of the free performance KBS held last month on the 6th at the Seoul Gocheok Sky Dome. Approximately 18,000 people gathered at the event. It was Cho Yong-pil's first TV concert stage since KBS's "Big Show" in 1997, marking 28 years. KBS had been striving for over 10 years to invite Cho Yong-pil. Park Ji-young, head of KBS's large-scale event team, said, "KBS's long-standing wish to have Cho Yong-pil with us has been fulfilled," adding, "The timing seems to have aligned well in this meaningful year of the 80th anniversary of liberation."

During the performance, Cho Yong-pil passionately sang 29 songs including "Come Back to Busan Port," "Short Hair," "Dragonfly," "Void," "Dream," "Mona Lisa," "The Leopard of Kilimanjaro," "Bounce," and "Let's Go on a Trip." "Sad Beatrice" was performed together with the KBS Symphony Orchestra. Celebrities such as Lee Seung-gi and Go So-young were spotted attending the concert.

Junior singers paid tribute to Cho Yong-pil through pre-recorded videos. Lee Seung-chul said, "Cho Yong-pil's songs are not just songs but a genre," while Shin Seung-hoon mentioned, "He is a benchmark that gives confidence that one can do that at that age." Director Park Chan-wook recalled Cho Yong-pil's influence, saying, "Simply put, he is 'my hero.'" He added, "If a biographical film about Cho Yong-pil is made, I would like to see the modern history of Korea and the evolution of popular music."

In an interview with the production team after the broadcast, Cho Yong-pil expressed his nervousness, saying, "I am not used to appearing on TV." He explained, "If I don't do it now, I might not have many chances to see you all, and my voice might get worse in the future, so I decided to do it quickly." He credited consistent practice as the secret to his unwavering vocal ability. "The voice ages if you don't sing, so you have to keep it strong," he said. "My dream is to die on stage. How happy would it be to die while singing?"

KBS plans to air a behind-the-scenes documentary of the concert titled "Cho Yong-pil, Forever This Moment – The Record of That Day" on the 8th. Following that, a special edition of "Cho Yong-pil, Forever This Moment," including the unreleased footage of "Friend," will also be broadcast.
