Kim Junsu makes a spectacular return after 12 years... Successfully concludes Shanghai fan meeting

Singer and musical actor Kim Junsu held a fan meeting in Shanghai, China, on October 4th. This fan meeting was the first event in 12 years since the 2013 fan meeting and concert, attended by about 3,000 fans. The meeting with his fandom, called "Coconut," was a meaningful occasion for Kim Junsu.

This fan meeting took place amid rising anti-Korean sentiment in China following controversial remarks by actress Jun Ji-hyun in the recent Disney+ drama "Polaris." The industry regards Kim Junsu's fan meeting as a noteworthy issue. An industry insider stated, "Holding Kim Junsu's fan meeting amid the recent unfavorable feelings toward Korea itself is a remarkable issue."

Kim Junsu met with about 4,000 fans at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on July 28, 2013, and this was his first meeting with fans in a long time. Although the specific details of this fan meeting were not officially announced, the industry reports that talks and various events took place, showcasing Kim Junsu's diverse sides.

Amid growing restrictions on Korean artists' activities in China, Kim Junsu's fan meeting holds special significance. The "2025 Dream Concert," scheduled to be held in Sanya, Hainan Province, China, on the 26th of last month, was postponed, and Infinite's L, who was supposed to hold a fan meeting locally on the 27th, also postponed it due to "force majeure."

Jun Ji-hyun's remarks caused a major controversy in China. In episode 4 of "Polaris," she said, "Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall on the border area," which drew criticism. Her agency explained, "This was settled before the release of 'Polaris.'"

The Chinese clothing brand that featured Jun Ji-hyun as a model canceled an advertising shoot scheduled to take place in Seoul on the 25th of last month. Additionally, according to Hong Kong's Sing Tao Daily, the American cosmetics brand La Mer and the Swiss watch brand Piaget, both using Jun Ji-hyun as an advertising model, have stopped exposing advertisements featuring her on e-commerce platforms in China.

Kim Junsu's fan meeting is recorded as an important event that continued communication with Chinese fans despite these circumstances. The industry expects ongoing interest in Korean artists' activities in China in the future.
