
Comedian Lee Kyung-kyu recently opened up honestly about the controversy surrounding his drugged driving. On the 15th, he appeared as a special MC alongside Kim Sook on tvN STORY's variety show "What's the Point of Leaving It?" and shared his experience. During the broadcast, when his past hit works and catchphrases were mentioned, Lee Kyung-kyu said, "Let's hold back a bit on talking about past memories." Then he added, "How much do you think I have to talk about? Drugged driving!" which surprised the cast.
Lee Kyung-kyu was caught driving in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on June 8 while under the influence of prescribed medication and was sent to the prosecution without detention. At the time, he said, "I was taking medication for panic disorder and didn't realize I shouldn't drive when feeling unwell," and added, "I will be more careful from now on." He candidly shared the psychological pressure he experienced due to this incident. He said, "I realized that I could think about death in my life. It was very serious. Now that time has passed, I'm okay, but the trauma lasted a long time."
Lee Young-ja conveyed the feelings of juniors who were surprised when they heard about Lee Kyung-kyu's incident, saying, "I thought oppa was going to be in trouble. I was worried he might collapse from being sick." Lee Kyung-kyu added, "Sudden misfortune that comes crashing in can't be helped. There was no way to handle it." He also confessed, "It felt like everyone in the world was staring only at me," sharing his feelings at the time.
On the show, Lee Kyung-kyu joked, "I made this joke a lot: 'If you avoid the police box, you end up at the police station.' I've been to the police box and the police station. I even stood at the photo line." Lee Young-ja responded with laughter, "Oppa, I've stood at the photo line too." Kim Sook chimed in, "Sister, I stood there first. I went ahead early."
Lee Kyung-kyu also talked about his broadcasting activities. He recalled, "I really did a lot of programs back then. I did all the news programs," and added, "They didn't pay a single penny, but I did 20 programs a week. It was my peak." He continued, "Honestly, I struggled a lot with whether or not to talk about this on the show. But since I thought you guys might find it hard to ask, I'm telling you in advance," and calmly shared, "(My) health is okay now. I've become much kinder since that incident."
He also mentioned the psychological changes he experienced after the drugged driving incident. He explained his psychological pressure, saying, "Sudden misfortune that comes crashing in can't be helped. There wasn't a news program I didn't appear on then." Lee Kyung-kyu added, "It felt like everyone in the world was staring only at me. I did 20 programs a week. It was my peak."
Lee Kyung-kyu explained that the day before the incident, his panic disorder symptoms worsened, so he took medication, and the next day, feeling unwell, he drove himself to a hospital appointment. He clarified that all the medication he took was legally prescribed after a specialist's diagnosis. Lee Kyung-kyu expressed his determination not to repeat the same mistake, saying, "I will be more careful from now on."
The controversy over Lee Kyung-kyu's drugged driving raised awareness among many people through the psychological pressure he experienced and the social response. Based on his experience, he also offered advice to juniors. Lee Kyung-kyu advised, "Most people don't care about others as much as you think. Don't take it to heart," but confessed that in his own situation, it felt like everyone in the world was staring only at him.
