Coach Kim Yeon-kyung lays the groundwork for victory in the first showdown against Japan's Shujitsu High School

'Victory Wonder Dogs' engaged in a prideful showdown in the Korea-Japan match against Japan's strongest high school team, Shujitsu High School. Led by coach Kim Yeon-koung, 'Victory Wonder Dogs' played this match in the 4th episode of the MBC variety show 'Rookie Coach Kim Yeon-koung,' which aired on the 19th. This match was Coach Kim's first Korea-Japan match and attracted much attention.

Before the match, Coach Kim traveled to Japan to analyze the opposing team's strength. He observed Shujitsu High School's skills firsthand by attending the Inter-High, the largest high school volleyball tournament famous as the setting of the anime 'Haikyuu!!' After returning home, he went straight to the gym to train with the 'Victory Wonder Dogs' players. Coach Kim instilled a resolute determination in the players as they trained.

To break through Shujitsu's strong defense, 'Victory Wonder Dogs' conducted intensive training. Coach Kim worked hard to improve the skills of setters Inayeon, Lee Jin, and Gu Sol. As training progressed, the players showed growth, which moved the viewers.

When the match began, 'Victory Wonder Dogs' faced a crisis amid the overwhelming cheers of the Japanese supporters and the momentum of Shujitsu players. Coach Kim was determined to win desperately in the situation of one win and one loss in two matches. In the first set, 'Victory Wonder Dogs' were thrown off by an early 0-5 deficit. Coach Kim pointed out the players who failed to execute the promised plays and organized the situation. Captain Pyo Seung-joo comforted the confused players and sparked their fighting spirit.

Coach Kim strategically moved the players by designating the blocking positions of the opposing players. The scene where they succeeded in triple blocking left a strong impression on viewers. Especially, Pyo Seung-joo, who played under Captain Kim Yeon-koung during the Tokyo Olympics, now leading as the captain of 'Victory Wonder Dogs,' inspired many. Pyo contributed to recovering the lost 5 points early in the first set by shaking the opponent's defense with good serves. He recorded 8 points and a 55% attack success rate by destabilizing Shujitsu High School with stable defense and sharp attacks.

In the second set, Coach Kim proposed a new attacking method. Noticing that Shujitsu's defense was concentrated in the back row, he advised pushing attacks. Pyo perfectly executed Coach Kim's strategy, creating a 14-14 tie. As the maestro on the court, he led the game and energized the team.

When setter Inayeon's space began to be penetrated, Coach Kim substituted her with Gu Sol. Gu raised the blocking position and delivered perfect sets, leaving a strong impression. The broadcast team and teammates could not help but admire the performance of 'Wonder Dogs' backup setter' Gu Sol. Commentator Lee Ho-geun entertained viewers with a pun, saying "'Gu' Sol 'sol' honestly does well."

'Victory Wonder Dogs' took the first and second sets consecutively, moving one step closer to victory. However, in the third set, they began to falter against Shujitsu's hellish defense and side attacks. Coach Kim ordered strengthening the blocking, and Inku-shi and Moon Myung-hwa blocked the opponent's attacks, catching up to 20-21. Whether 'Victory Wonder Dogs' can overcome the hardship and seize victory depends on Coach Kim's strategy.

Next week's broadcast will reveal the conclusion of the national competition against Japan's top high school volleyball team, Shujitsu High School. Additionally, a match against Gwangju Women's University volleyball team, which won the league championship two years after its founding, will also take place. Expectations for 'Victory Wonder Dogs'' performance are rising. The 5th episode of the MBC variety show 'Rookie Coach Kim Yeon-koung' will air on the 26th at 9:10 PM.
