Son Ye-jin breaks seven years of silence to return to the screen

Actress Son Ye-jin recently shared her thoughts on the film "No Choice." In an interview held at a café in Sogyeok-dong, Seoul, Son Ye-jin candidly spoke about the movie and her personal updates. "No Choice" tells the story of Mansu (Lee Byung-hun), who, after being fired, prepares to find a new job to protect his wife and two children. Son Ye-jin plays the role of Mansu's wife, Miri, delicately portraying her inner turmoil.

Son Ye-jin recalled that when she first received the script, her role as Miri had a small amount of screen time. She said, "The director gradually infused more presence into the character and paid attention even to the final edited version. I didn't want to hear, 'Did you just do it because it was Director Park's work?'" Regarding her chemistry with Lee Byung-hun, she added, "He always seemed calm, which I felt was a great strength as an actor. Through promotional activities, I also developed a family-like atmosphere with seniors Lee Sung-min, Yum Hye-ran, and Park Hee-soon, whom I didn't meet in the film."

Son Ye-jin expressed, "I am very satisfied with the final product. Beyond my acting, hearing the music, watching the story unfold, and seeing such beautiful visuals brings a fresh feeling. It's on a completely different level from watching on a small monitor on set. I've watched the film about four times, and I noticed things in IMAX that I didn't see before, which made me really happy." She returned to the big screen after about seven years since the 2018 film "Negotiation."

Son Ye-jin revealed that her personal life underwent significant changes through marriage, childbirth, and parenting. She said, "During the period of giving birth and caring for my child, I didn't have the mental space to think about returning. While doing 24-hour childcare, I had curiosity and anxiety about what project to start with again." She emphasized that her expectations for new roles outweighed concerns about career interruption after childbirth. "I never thought I wouldn't be able to work. As I get older, there are roles I can play, and I can show the real side of being a mother. I also see it as a new beginning in a different direction. I'm still open to melodrama acting," she explained.

In particular, Son Ye-jin noted that her work-life balance changed after childbirth. She said, "Having a son completely changed my life. I barely remember what kind of actress I was before. When I take the stroller to the playground, neighborhood moms are sometimes surprised by my casual appearance. Being a mom has become my top priority in daily life. I want to give my child as much happiness as possible during childhood. Even if I have to shoot in the provinces, I leave early in the morning after seeing my child asleep. In the past, I would agonize for days over important shoots, but now I have so much to do. My ON and OFF times have become clear, and I've matured, thinking that I have to be strong to protect my family."

She also shared her feelings on the first day of shooting. "I was anxious about leaving my child behind, but the moment I got in the car, I felt liberated. Even the travel time was happy, and I could enjoy acting more on set. There were difficult moments while acting, but I was grateful even for those worries," she said. Regarding plans for a second child, she laughed, "I want to have three in my heart, but it's not easy." She mentioned that there are no major disagreements with her husband Hyun Bin regarding childcare. "My husband always follows me," she added.

After "No Choice," Son Ye-jin is set to present upcoming works including the Netflix series "Scandal." She reflected, "Even after becoming a veteran and getting older, it's not easy to accept acting comfortably. However, I have gained the leisure to enjoy acting by acknowledging my limits more than before. As I accept myself, I gradually think, 'This is fun.'"
