The group LE SSERAFIM is capturing public attention with their new single "Spaghetti." This song cheerfully conveys the message of being an "unwanted presence that eventually sticks in your mind," reaffirming LE SSERAFIM's confidence and boldness. Within just a week of its release, "Spaghetti" has ranked high on music charts, drawing significant public interest.
"Spaghetti" belongs to the alternative punk pop genre and features participation from HYBE Chairman Bang Si-hyuk, as well as renowned American pop producers Federico Vindver and Gian Stone. These producers have crafted sounds for global pop stars such as Justin Timberlake, Ariana Grande, and Coldplay. Additionally, BTS's J-Hope contributed a featured rap, adding a stylish touch to the track. Members Sakura and Heo Yunjin also took part in writing and composing, enhancing the song's authenticity.
The concept of "Spaghetti" is characterized by its use of food and cooking as metaphors. On stage, the choreography includes signature moves using the pinky finger, gestures mimicking vomiting like SIMS characters, and motions of removing food stuck in the mouth, intuitively conveying the concept. This choreography was created by Source Music's performance directing team and international choreographer Todd Williamson.
The music video creatively utilizes the themes of "cooking" and "spaghetti." The members are shown actually making spaghetti and handling tomato sauce, visually representing the symbol of "inescapable spaghetti (= LE SSERAFIM)." The group dance starting from sitting on the floor, finger-waving motions, and rhythmical shoulder movements combine to complete the theme of "consumable presence." The music video was impressively directed by photographer Go Won-tae.
Since its release, "Spaghetti" has surpassed 27 million views and topped YouTube's daily popular music video chart. LE SSERAFIM adopted a cooking variety show format in their comeback program "Spaghetti, Wrapping the Earth," where they competed in a unique cooking battle with comedian Eom Ji-yoon. This program helped expand LE SSERAFIM's spaghetti universe into reality.
On the 29th of last month, they held a food truck event on Yonsei University's campus in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, distributing spaghetti for free and strengthening communication with students. Through these diverse activities, "Spaghetti" has established itself as a song that captivates the public's ears. As of the 2nd, it ranked 2nd on Melon's "Hot 100" and 8th on the "Top 100," achieving notable success on music charts.
Their achievements are also prominent overseas. On the 1st, "Spaghetti" reached 46th place on the UK Official Singles Top 100 chart, marking the group's highest ranking to date. This significantly surpasses the 83rd place achieved by the title track "Crazy" from their previous mini-album.
Critic Lim Hee-yoon evaluated, "'Spaghetti' reveals an experimental charm that differentiates itself from LE SSERAFIM's previous style in both lyrics and sound. The collaboration with J-Hope maximized the synergy effect." Furthermore, at the "GeForce Gamer Festival" held on the 31st of last month, Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, referred to LE SSERAFIM as a "Great performer," reaffirming their global presence.
LE SSERAFIM demonstrated freshness in concept and solid stage skills through "Spaghetti." They have elegantly expanded the B-grade sensibility that began with "Crazy," and the "Eat It Up" challenge is spreading on short-form platforms like TikTok. This has led to continued success on music charts and meme consumption within the global fandom, forming a trend of long-term popularity.
Critic Lim stated, "LE SSERAFIM is expanding from 'hipness' to 'wit and experimentation.' This current change goes beyond a simple concept shift and makes us pay attention to what kind of musical experiments LE SSERAFIM will pursue in the future." LE SSERAFIM's "Spaghetti" stands as an important milestone showcasing their musical evolution.
