Singer Sung Yuri married former golfer Ahn Sung Hyun in 2017 and gave birth to twin daughters in 2022. After giving birth, Sung Yuri successfully lost 30 kg but stated that she does not recommend starving diets. In a recently aired variety show, Sung Yuri shared her personal experience with dieting.
During the broadcast, a viewer mentioned dieting due to health concerns, saying, "I want to eat a lot, but I can't eat freely because I'm afraid of gaining weight." In response, Sung Yuri said, "Dieting is a lifelong task for me as well," and added, "In fact, I gained up to 80 kg after having my babies." She said, "But the habit of starving must be corrected quickly," and explained, "Now, even if I skip one meal, I lose weight quickly, but as you get older, even if you starve, you don't lose weight."
Sung Yuri spoke about the side effects of starving diets. Starving or restricting food may temporarily reduce weight, but this is only due to a loss of stored water or muscle in the body and does not lead to a healthy physique. Rather, it can result in sagging and loose skin. Additionally, basal metabolic rate decreases, reducing the body's energy expenditure. Even if the same amount of food is consumed, weight can easily increase.
Furthermore, Sung Yuri warned about the yo-yo effect. The yo-yo effect is when weight returns to its original state or even increases after successful dieting. Starving diets can trigger binge eating, which raises the likelihood of the yo-yo effect. When starving, the hormone ghrelin, which stimulates appetite, is secreted in large amounts. This causes hunger to be felt more intensely than usual, and the stress from food restriction increases the risk of binge eating.
To lose weight healthily, consistent exercise and dietary management are necessary. Aerobic exercises such as walking, swimming, and running help increase physical activity. Aerobic exercise is effective not only for burning calories but also for removing body fat. Strength training increases muscle mass, raises basal metabolic rate, and contributes to blood sugar control.
Protein supplementation after exercise is also important. Protein is essential for synthesizing and maintaining muscles and provides satiety to prevent overeating. It also contributes to strengthening the immune system. Fruits and vegetables rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals have low calories and can be consumed without burden, helping to reduce fatigue and inflammation in the body.
Based on her experience, Sung Yuri emphasized healthy dieting methods. She said, "Dieting is not a short-term goal but something to manage for a lifetime." Sung Yuri recommended sustainable weight management through healthy eating habits and exercise.
