YouTuber Zeroby claims Pokachip uses '0.6 potatoes'; Orion responds

YouTuber Zerobi announced the results of an experiment on the raw materials of Orion's potato snack 'Poca Chip.' Zerobi calculated the amount of potatoes used in one bag of Poca Chip in a video titled "How Many Potatoes Are in Poca Chip?" on his YouTube channel. Based on his own attempt to make Poca Chips, he claimed that one bag contains 0.6 potatoes.

On the 6th, Zerobi uploaded a video mentioning the nitrogen filling issue of Poca Chip. He began the experiment by saying, "Poca Chip is famous for the saying that if you buy nitrogen, you get potato chips." He first measured the diameter of Poca Chips and purchased three potatoes of similar size. After washing, the potatoes were sliced into 1.5–2 mm thickness and soaked in water to remove starch. Then, the potato slices were blanched, fried in oil, and seasoned with salt. The total weight of the finished chips was 324g, producing about 108g of chips from one potato. Based on this, he calculated the amount of potatoes in one bag of Poca Chip.

As of the 10th, the video had attracted significant attention with 6.59 million views. However, Orion refuted Zerobi's experimental results. On the 8th, Orion explained through its official account that "one 66g bag of Poca Chip contains 1 to 1.5 potatoes weighing about 200g each on average." They added, "Raw potatoes contain 80–85% moisture, and since most of the moisture evaporates during frying, a simple weight comparison is not possible."

Orion also explained, "The high-temperature, short-time frying process used in factories results in low oil absorption and high moisture removal, but at home, depending on frying temperature, time, and blanching degree, more oil may be absorbed." They noted, "Due to these differences, the amount of potatoes may have been underestimated." Furthermore, they emphasized that Poca Chip is made from a dedicated variety developed by the Gangwon Potato Research Institute and that the manufacturing process is continuously improved to maintain a light and crispy texture.

Poca Chip has been a beloved national snack for over 40 years. However, it has been criticized as a "nitrogen snack" because the contents appear small compared to its large volume. Orion explained that nitrogen filling in snack products is essential for maintaining freshness and preventing breakage. Produced with the thinnest thickness in Korea, Poca Chip requires technology to increase the amount filled while preventing breakage with minimal nitrogen filling. Orion continues to make efforts to develop such technology.
