Director Lim Hyun-wook revealed the working process of JTBC's new Saturday-Sunday drama "Waiting for Kyung-do." The drama will premiere on December 6 at 10:40 PM and tells the story of Lee Kyung-do (played by Park Seo-joon) and Seo Ji-woo (played by Won Ji-an), who have each experienced two breakups, reuniting as a reporter who covered an affair scandal and the wife of the scandal's main figure.
Director Lim Hyun-wook described his first impression of "Waiting for Kyung-do" as follows: "While reading the script, my mouth was smiling but my eyes were crying. It was a rare romance that simultaneously delivers cheerfulness, excitement, and lingering deep sorrow." He stated that this work is not a simple romance but a project that revisits the emotional line of his directing career.
Director Lim said, "The biggest concern was how to translate the flow of emotions between the characters onto the screen." He emphasized the specialness of the short time—less than a year—that Lee Kyung-do and Seo Ji-woo spent together. Therefore, he added that he hoped their story would be connected as a single emotional line rather than divided into three periods.
He explained, "When expressing one period, I portrayed Kyung-do and Ji-woo's characters with external contrasts." He set Kyung-do as an unchanging axis, while Ji-woo was established as a flowing emotion. Kyung-do's appearance was given only detailed changes without major transformations, whereas Ji-woo was styled distinctly differently in each period.
Additionally, Director Lim said, "In our drama, the seasons were considered a character, so we included all four seasons—spring, summer, fall, and winter—in the visuals." He explained that filming was conducted so that the emotional changes of the two characters would meet the sentiments of the seasons.
Director Lim Hyun-wook shared, "Hearing that many people have been waiting for 'Waiting for Kyung-do,' I too eagerly awaited the day to present this work." He added that he feels great excitement and anticipation at the thought of showing Kyung-do and Ji-woo's story to viewers.
In this drama, Park Seo-joon and Won Ji-an portray characters with subtle differences in perspective. The released character poster captures the complex emotions of former lovers Lee Kyung-do and Seo Ji-woo meeting again. Lee Kyung-do is staring blankly at Seo Ji-woo, who stands beyond the café window, while Seo Ji-woo looks at Kyung-do beyond the window with a tender expression.
Their conversation reveals traces of emotions felt after their breakup. Lee Kyung-do's line, "You are still cruel," and Seo Ji-woo's, "Kyung-do said he would come if I waited," imply that their relationship cannot be simply concluded as a breakup.
Meanwhile, Kim Mi-kyung, Kim Yong-jun, and Nam Gi-ae play the roles of Lee Kyung-do and Seo Ji-woo's parents, adding immersion to their romance. Kim Mi-kyung plays Jo Nam-sook, Kyung-do's mother, a character who manages the household meticulously. Kim Yong-jun portrays Lee Han-soo, Kyung-do's father, a kind and spirited character. Nam Gi-ae takes on the role of Jang Hyun-kyung, Ji-woo's mother, who shows a cold attitude toward her daughter.
The drama unfolds through the atmosphere of the two families, which greatly influence Lee Kyung-do and Seo Ji-woo's lives and relationship. Attention is focused on how their roles as families at opposite extremes will affect their relationship.
JTBC's new Saturday-Sunday drama "Waiting for Kyung-do" will premiere on December 6 at 10:40 PM, attracting much attention. This work, filled with Director Lim Hyun-wook's deep affection and concerns, is expected to leave a strong impression on viewers.
