
National actor Lee Soon-jae passed away at the age of 91, and on the morning of the 27th, a funeral ceremony was held at Asan Medical Center in Songpa-gu, Seoul. Family members, colleagues, and juniors from the entertainment industry attended the event. Jung Bo-seok, who appeared with the deceased in MBC's "High Kick Through the Roof," served as the master of ceremonies, while junior actors Ha Ji-won and Kim Young-chul each delivered eulogies.
In her eulogy, Ha Ji-won said, "A respected and beloved teacher," adding, "I still can't believe that we have to send you off here today." She recalled the works she shared with the deceased and the relationships that followed, saying, "The conversations about acting calmly shared contained the long years you lived as an actor." She also vowed, "I will become an actor who is not ashamed before you—honest in front of the work, warm in front of people, and humble to the end in front of acting."
Kim Young-chul expressed his sorrow over the death, saying, "If only it were a lie, if only it were a scene from a drama, how wonderful that would be." He recalled, "You showed us the path of acting, but more importantly, you taught us how to live as a person." Kim Young-chul added, "You were always the same on set," and "No matter the situation or in front of anyone, you always maintained dignity and courtesy."
The late Lee Soon-jae passed away in the early morning of the 25th at the age of 91. Since his debut in the 1956 play "Beyond the Horizon," he appeared in numerous works such as "Samo-gok," "Heo Jun," and "The Princess's Man," establishing himself as an iconic figure in Korean broadcasting. He maintained a passion for theater and continued to perform on stage, appearing in the play "Waiting for Godot" until last year.
Lee Soon-jae served three terms as president of the Korea Broadcasting Actors Association and ran as a Democratic Liberal Party candidate in the 14th general election in 1992, serving as a member of the National Assembly. The government posthumously awarded him the Geumgwan Culture Medal upon hearing the news of his passing. The Culture Medal is awarded to those who have made significant contributions to the development of culture and arts and the enjoyment of culture by the public.
Many colleagues, including actors Kim Na-woon, Park Sang-won, Lee Moo-saeng, Yoo Dong-geun, Yoo In-chon, Yoo Tae-woong, Won Ki-joon, Choi Soo-jong, Jung Tae-woo, Jung Il-woo, Jung Joon-ho, Jung Dong-hwan, Jung Joon-ha, and broadcaster Jang Sung-kyu, attended the funeral to bid farewell to the deceased. The funeral ceremony began at 5:30 a.m., and the departure ceremony was held at 6:20 a.m. The burial site is Eden Paradise in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province.
In her eulogy, Ha Ji-won vowed, "I will do my best to carry on the heart and attitude you showed," and tearfully said, "I love you, teacher. Ha Ji-won, your eternal fan club president." Kim Young-chul recalled, "You looked at everyone so warmly," adding, "I still cannot forget that moment."
The late Lee Soon-jae is regarded as a living witness to Korean popular culture, and his passing brought great sorrow to the Korean entertainment industry. His acting career served as a model for many juniors, and his legacy will be remembered in the years to come.
