The first solo album of Chaeyoung, a member of the group TWICE, is gaining significant attention among music fans worldwide. Chaeyoung's solo album, "LIL FANTASY vol. 1," was listed in Rolling Stone's "100 Best Albums of 2025." The album ranked 86th, and comparisons were made between the two artists as BLACKPINK's Jennie's first solo full-length album, "Ruby," ranked 29th on the same list.
Rolling Stone described Chaeyoung's album as "a work that shows room for growth." The publication explained that "Chaeyoung, who rose to stardom as a member of TWICE, revealed a new side of herself in her first solo project," highlighting themes in the album's lyrics such as the experience of losing a friend, forgiveness, and expressing her unique personality. Rolling Stone summarized that Chaeyoung is currently living her own small fantasy but remains an artist with potential for growth.
One reason Chaeyoung's album is receiving attention is its genre diversity. The album includes many songs from non-mainstream genres that are not widely known in Korea. Generally, idol members tend to focus on mass appeal when working as solo artists. However, Chaeyoung did not follow this traditional K-pop formula and presented a dreamy pop sound combining neo-soul based on R&B, trip-hop blending hip-hop and electronic music, and intense punk.
The tracks on the album convey various messages, including aspirations before a "new beginning," loneliness, growth, and optimism. In one of the double title tracks, "SHOOT (Firecracker)," Chaeyoung sings about "starting anew through her solo album" and expresses the desire to "enjoy a fun party together." Another title track, "AVOCADO (feat. Gliiico)," uses the fruit avocado as a metaphor for stepping into a new world.
The background enabling Chaeyoung to take on these challenges is the fan base she built while active with TWICE. While idols generally prioritize mass appeal, Chaeyoung made new musical attempts based on her fans' support. She focused on completing the music she wanted without worrying about external opinions.
Chaeyoung's solo album is also receiving positive responses domestically. Music critic Kim Yoonha recently stated in a YouTube video, "The album is highly complete. It feels like an album made by an artist with over 7 to 8 years of experience," and added, "It is solid and well-crafted, making listeners think, 'Maybe I should listen to more K-pop.'" This evaluation shows that Chaeyoung's musical growth is being positively recognized by the public.
Chaeyoung's first solo album is becoming an important milestone in establishing her musical identity. Through diverse genres and messages, she is building her own musical world, which is expected to have a positive impact on her future activities. Chaeyoung's path, valuing communication with fans and walking her own way, continues to be highly anticipated.
