The Severance Mind Band held its inaugural concert on December 9th at 7 p.m. in the main auditorium of Yonsei University. This concert was organized as part of the Severance Hospital Min Yoon-gi Treatment Center, established through a 5 billion KRW donation by BTS's Suga (real name: Min Yoon-gi). The Min Yoon-gi Treatment Center operates an art-integrated therapy program for children with autism spectrum disorder, offering opportunities to learn instrument playing and ensemble performance alongside therapy.
This program focuses on enhancing social communication skills by allowing children to choose the instruments they want to play and participate in ensemble performances. Research shows that music-based group therapy is effective for children who have difficulty with verbal communication. The main auditorium, with a capacity of 1,600 seats, was filled for the inaugural concert, where the children showcased their efforts after months of preparation by playing various instruments and singing.
The children performed on percussion instruments, saxophone, clarinet, guitar, and more, presenting pieces such as Leopold Mozart's "Toy Symphony," Bicycle Riding Scenery's "To You, I Am; To Me, You Are," and Loveholics' "Butterfly" to the audience. The concert was hosted by announcer Kim Il-jung and began with a congratulatory video from BTS's Suga. In the video, Suga called out the names of the children before the performance, delivering messages of encouragement.
The concert was also attended by Dream With Ensemble, Korea's first professional ensemble for developmental disabilities, and renowned guitarist Park Shin-won, who performed together. Director Cheon Geun-ah said in her stage greeting, "When we first started this project, I never imagined a day like today would come. During the preparation process, I witnessed the miracle of generosity begetting generosity," adding, "Through the Mind program and rehearsal, the children developed patience and learned to coordinate and wait with others."
She also expressed deep gratitude to BTS's Suga, saying, "I am deeply thankful to Suga for making all of this possible." The ticket proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Min Yoon-gi Treatment Center. This event became an important opportunity to provide children with autism spectrum disorder therapeutic and social experiences through music.
