Choi Ji-woo transforms into a strong mother in 'Sugar'... "I was cautious about portraying maternal love"

Actress Choi Ji-woo revealed her role and acting process at the production presentation of the film "Sugar." The production presentation held on December 18 at CGV I'Park Mall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, was attended by Choi Ji-woo, Min Jin-woong, and Go Dong-ha. Director Choi Se-chun was absent from the event due to personal reasons.

The film "Sugar" is a human drama about Mira, a mother who goes beyond laws and regulations to create medical devices herself for her young son diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This work is based on a true story. Choi Ji-woo played the strong mother Mira, who confronts the world to protect her son, expressing intense maternal love.

Choi Ji-woo said, "Since the acting is based on real events, there were many cautious aspects." She added, "Like a traffic accident, many things happen to the peaceful family due to the illness of my son Dong-myeong (played by Go Dong-ha). I acted out the struggle to protect the child."

Min Jin-woong, who played Mira's husband, praised Choi Ji-woo's acting, saying, "She delivered a great performance showing what maternal love is." He added, "Seeing the child suffer right in front of me was not easy. I tried to endure the sadness and be present for my beloved wife and child."

Go Dong-ha recalled, "While preparing for the film, I heard many stories from fellow patients," and said, "I tried to act by restraining my emotions for the sake of my family rather than expressing my own feelings."

The film "Sugar" is scheduled to be released on January 21, 2026. Choi Ji-woo shared her thoughts on acting, saying, "Mira is a character who pretends to be okay at work and home. In reality, she is very scared and fearful." She continued, "At first, when my child was diagnosed with diabetes, I was scared and afraid, but now I feel a greater sense of responsibility. I focused on hiding my emotions."

The film "Sugar" is expected to leave a deep impression on audiences with its touching story centered on maternal love and family affection. Through this work, Choi Ji-woo is set to showcase the most passionate acting transformation in her filmography.
