"Zootopia 2" surpasses 5 million... on the verge of breaking this year's highest box office record

Disney animation "Zootopia 2" and Ha Jung-woo's directed and starring film "Upstairs Neighbors" continue to succeed at the winter box office. According to the integrated computer network for movie ticket sales, "Zootopia 2" attracted 1,006,087 viewers during the weekend from the 12th to the 14th, its third week after release, securing the number one spot at the weekend box office. The cumulative audience reached 5,370,947, maintaining the top position every day since its release.

Notably, "Zootopia 2" surpassed 5 million viewers in just 19 days, setting a record. This pace is about 20 days faster than this year's top-grossing film, "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train." "Zootopia 2" tells the story of the best duo, Judy and Nick, as they track down the mysterious snake Gary and venture into a new world. The film is achieving box office results surpassing its predecessor, increasing the potential for long-term success.

Leading the success of Korean films is Ha Jung-woo's "Upstairs Neighbors." During the same period, it attracted around 140,000 viewers, maintaining the number one spot among Korean films at the box office. The cumulative audience reached 409,246. In the overall box office ranking, it stands second after "Zootopia 2," competing closely with major foreign films. "Upstairs Neighbors" depicts a story about a couple living upstairs and a couple living downstairs who, entangled by noise complaints, share a meal one night. Ha Jung-woo's sharp observational skills as director and the actors' intense performances have received favorable reviews from audiences.

With foreign and Korean films showing strong box office momentum side by side, the previously sluggish theater market is gaining vitality. The top reservation rate is held by the movie "Avatar: The Way of Fire," scheduled to open on December 17. As of noon that day, it recorded an overwhelming 73.9% reservation rate. The number of reserved viewers was 400,493, and the reservation sales amounted to 6,131,108,650 won.

In second place is "Zootopia 2," with a reservation rate of 10.1% and 54,962 reserved viewers. Third place goes to "Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight," based on a Japanese novel, with a reservation rate of 2.9%. The number of reserved viewers was 15,927. Following that, the Korean film "If We," starring Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young, ranked fourth with a reservation rate of 2.8% and 14,924 reserved viewers.

The movie "Avatar: The Way of Fire" is approaching its release on the 17th with nearly 590,000 advance reservations. According to the Korea Film Council's integrated computer network, "Avatar 3" recorded a 76% reservation rate as of 9 a.m., with 588,697 reserved viewers. "Avatar" is a sci-fi series directed by James Cameron; the first film ranked number one worldwide at the box office and attracted 13.33 million viewers in Korea. "Avatar: The Way of Water" also drew 10.82 million viewers domestically.

"Avatar 3" continues the Pandora universe, telling the story of the arrival of the Fire Nation before Jake Sully's family and the great danger facing Pandora. Despite its long runtime of 197 minutes, the film vividly presents naval battles, underwater fights, and aerial combat. Director James Cameron expressed a sense of technological advancement, saying, "We have reached a stage where we can realize the images imagined in our minds exactly as envisioned."

"Avatar 3" uses about 3,500 VFX shots, with virtually every scene composed of special effects. Over 3,000 staff members spent more than four years working on visual effects. Costume designer Deborah L. Scott created about 8,000 illustrations and 639 samples while designing costumes for the new tribes. The intricate visuals of the Mangwan and Tilarim tribes are expected to greet audiences.

Meanwhile, on the 16th, "Zootopia 2" took first place in the daily box office, attracting 93,162 viewers that day, with a cumulative audience of 5,545,670. Korean films are experiencing sluggish box office performance, with "Upstairs Neighbors" ranking second on that day, drawing 17,587 viewers and reaching a cumulative audience of 446,003.
