Director Ryu Hyun-kyung's first feature film 'Don't Confess' released... A one-man show from production to distribution

Ryu Hyun-kyung directly experienced the entire process of film production and distribution through her first feature film as a director, "Don't Confess." Released on December 17, this film is based on an episode that began by chance on the set of a movie in which Ryu Hyun-kyung appeared. Along with directing the film, Ryu Hyun-kyung established the production company "Ryune" and took charge of distribution.

The production of "Don't Confess" was triggered by an accidental confession that occurred on the film set. Ryu Hyun-kyung said, "It rained on the last day of shooting, so we couldn't film. At that time, Kim Choong-gil confessed in front of the camera. That scene was uncomfortable yet amusing." Afterward, Ryu Hyun-kyung conceived the film's narrative based on this spontaneous situation.

The filming process was divided into two acts. The first act was shot in early autumn, and the second act took place in winter in Busan. Ryu Hyun-kyung explained, "There was pressure to complete the first act after shooting it, but it was a time when no answers came. Director Kim O-ki proposed a performance in Busan, which allowed us to continue filming." The shooting in Busan became an opportunity to further specify the characters' settings.

The final editing process of the film took a very long time. Ryu Hyun-kyung revealed, "We used almost every scene we shot and edited for a long time. I kept revising it with editor Park Jong-min." She also mentioned that the sound work for the club scene and color correction were not easy.

The establishment of the distribution company "Ryune" began by chance. Ryu Hyun-kyung said, "After the film was invited to the Seoul Independent Film Festival, there were positive discussions with a distributor, but eventually, communication stopped. Later, I received a proposal asking if it could be released on a YouTube channel. I politely declined because I thought it was important to watch it together in theaters." After that, Ryu Hyun-kyung decided to handle distribution herself.

To secure theaters for the film's release, Ryu Hyun-kyung sent emails to independent art cinemas and multiplex arthouse theaters nationwide. She wrote several emails with the message, "Hello, this is Ryu Hyun-kyung. I would like your theater to screen the film I made." Ultimately, screenings were confirmed at 10 theaters, and she expressed gratitude whenever she received positive responses.

Ryu Hyun-kyung personally chose the film's release date, December 17. She said, "At first, I considered a January release, but everyone I consulted recommended December. Since the film has a year-end atmosphere, I judged that a December release was appropriate."

Preparing for the press and distribution preview screenings was also challenging. Ryu Hyun-kyung stated, "The method was that the person who sent the application email the fastest could secure the screening room at the desired time, so I was nervous. In the end, we were able to hold the preview at the desired time."

Ryu Hyun-kyung also mentioned her future plans. She revealed that the thriller film "Sapiens," in which she appeared, is scheduled to be released next year. Additionally, she aims to shoot next year with a screenplay she has already completed, and she plans to appear in it as well. Ryu Hyun-kyung said, "The future of Ryune depends on 'Don't Confess.' I hope it will be loved by the audience."

"Don't Confess" is a work that shows the entire process of film production through Ryu Hyun-kyung's directing and distribution experience. Her determination to convey the film's message through encounters with the audience stands out.
