Hwang Hana, third-generation heir of Namyang Dairy Products, arrested in Cambodia on drug charges and detained

Hwang Hana, the third-generation heir of Namyang Dairy Products and the founder's descendant, who became the subject of a police investigation on drug charges, has been arrested. Hwang was apprehended in Cambodia after fleeing overseas. She had previously been tried and detained twice in South Korea on drug charges. This incident occurred while Hwang is under suspicion of violating the Narcotics Control Act.

Seo Hyo-jin, the chief judge in charge of warrants at the Suwon District Court Anyang Branch, issued an arrest warrant for Hwang Hana on December 26. Judge Seo stated during the pre-arrest suspect interrogation, "There is a concern about evidence destruction." Hwang's prior record of the same crime and her more than two years of fleeing abroad were factors in the decision to detain her.

During the warrant hearing, Hwang denied all charges, stating, "I did not use methamphetamine nor did I administer it to acquaintances." She said she decided to return to South Korea because she wanted to take responsibility for the child she recently gave birth to in Cambodia. On the morning of December 26, Hwang, along with the child and the biological father who were in Cambodia, returned to South Korea.

Hwang is suspected of injecting methamphetamine into two acquaintances using syringes in Seoul in July 2023. After becoming a target of police investigation, she left for Thailand in December. Following her departure to Thailand, the police requested Interpol to issue a blue notice for her whereabouts in May last year and invalidated her passport.

It is reported that Hwang expressed her intention to voluntarily appear before the police through her lawyer. The police went to Cambodia and, after coordination with the local consulate, arrested Hwang inside the national airline at Phnom Penh International Airport. She arrived in South Korea at 7:50 a.m. on December 24, was taken to Gwacheon Police Station, and was interrogated over two days. The police plan to investigate whether Hwang committed additional crimes.

Hwang is known as the founder of Namyang Dairy Products and attracted public attention due to her public relationship with singer Park Yoo-chun. She was already indicted for using methamphetamine three times at her home and was sentenced in 2019 to one year in prison with a two-year probation. However, during the probation period, she used drugs again and was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison.

When Hwang was under police investigation for drug use during her probation period, a key witness who testified against her drug charges, Mr. Oh, was known to be Hwang's husband. Although Oh and Hwang did not hold a wedding ceremony, they were legally registered as married. During police questioning on drug charges, Oh denied Hwang's involvement, stating, "I secretly injected methamphetamine while Hwang was asleep."

However, after a change of heart, Oh called an acquaintance and said he would surrender himself to the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul, reversing his previous statement. He later died by suicide. The police plan to thoroughly investigate Hwang Hana's case.
