American YouTuber Oliver recently mentioned the difficulties of living in the United States, which caused confusion due to some media reports. On the 26th, Oliver posted a video titled "8 Years of Immigration to the U.S. with My Korean Wife... Now I'm Really Giving Up" on his YouTube channel. In this video, he candidly shared the hardships of life in the U.S.
Oliver lives in Texas with his Korean wife and two children and emphasized the financial burdens he has felt since immigrating. He said, "Many people think there won't be any economic problems because the U.S. is a superpower, but that's not true," revealing that he will have to pay $8,000 in property taxes starting in 2026. He also explained that home insurance costs $4,402, and just owning a house results in an annual expense of about 18 million won. He expressed concern that these costs will increase by 15% each year.
Oliver especially expressed dissatisfaction with the U.S. healthcare system. He mentioned his wife's experience when her father was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, explaining the difficulties in accessing medical services. "It took about 10 days just to see the primary doctor. When we finally met, the answer was 'Go home, eat salt, and rest,'" he said, pointing out the structural problem that even if you want a detailed examination, you must go through the primary doctor.
After these statements were made public, some netizens speculated that Oliver and his wife would return to Korea. As a result, he was subjected to malicious comments and harassment. On the 28th, Oliver posted a clarification on his YouTube channel. He said, "Major media outlets published articles claiming we decided to go to Korea," emphasizing, "We have never made a specific decision about our whereabouts nor mentioned Korea." He added, "Because of the incorrect articles, our family was misunderstood as trying to freeload on Korea's healthcare system."
Oliver said, "Since we are already going through a really difficult time, the harsh comments hurt even more," and requested a correction in the reporting. He clarified that he only shared the realistic difficulties of living in the U.S. and his concerns in the video, without mentioning a move to Korea.
Born in 1988 and currently 37 years old, Oliver previously worked as an English teacher in Korea before becoming a YouTuber. He married a Korean woman in 2016, has two daughters, and currently resides in the U.S. His YouTube channel has 2.26 million subscribers and produces content on various topics.
