Park Geun-hyung recalls 70-year relationship with Lee Soon-jae on 'My Ugly Duckling'... Last request: "Please take care of the theater world"

Park Geun-hyung became emotional recalling the late Lee Soon-jae. On the 28th episode of SBS's "My Ugly Duckling," Park Geun-hyung appeared as a special MC. MC Seo Jang-hoon mentioned Lee Soon-jae's passing, saying, "It was a heartbreaking event for all the people." Park Geun-hyung expressed his sorrow, saying, "We endured hardships together for 70 years. It truly breaks my heart." He reminisced about Lee Soon-jae's personality, saying he liked to be considerate of others and enjoyed having conversations.

Park Geun-hyung was born in 1940, six years younger than Lee Soon-jae. He built a close friendship through performing plays with Shin Goo and Lee Soon-jae. He said, "His health suddenly deteriorated," expressing regret that he could not see him after he went to the hospital and had to say goodbye. Recalling the last time he met Lee Soon-jae, Park said, "I was performing a play in January, and he came there," sharing Lee's final request. Lee Soon-jae told him, "You have to take charge of the theater world from now on."

During the broadcast, Park Geun-hyung also mentioned the "romanticist" image he gained during the "Grandpas Over Flowers" days. He revealed that while his wife was undergoing surgery, he had to leave for filming the program and frequently called her out of worry. This led to his image as a devoted husband on the show.

Park Geun-hyung humorously responded, "Hearing compliments makes me want to live even longer," bringing laughter.

The late Lee Soon-jae passed away last month on the 25th at the age of 91. He debuted in 1956 with the play "Beyond the Horizon" and continued acting for nearly 70 years. The government posthumously awarded him the Gold Crown Cultural Medal, the highest honor in the cultural and artistic field.

Recalling his deep bond with Lee Soon-jae, Park said, "Senior Lee Soon-jae was considerate of others and truly enjoyed talking with people." He also emphasized his friendship with Shin Goo, saying, "The three of us often gathered to talk about theater."

Lee Soon-jae's determination toward his final days was also conveyed in the MBC documentary "Actor Lee Soon-jae, I Owe You a Lot." The documentary begins with a scene where agency representative Lee Seung-hee visits Lee Soon-jae while he was bedridden. Lee Soon-jae said, "The only thing I want to do is work."

Lee Soon-jae left his last work by appearing in the drama "Nonsense." Despite his frail body, he traveled between Seoul and Geoje Island to continue filming. Representative Lee Seung-hee recalled, "His left and right eyes no longer saw as before, but he said he needed to train more in acting."

Lee Soon-jae's final request, conveyed by Park Geun-hyung to "work hard," left a profound impression as if it were the true last words of an actor who regarded acting as life. Park Geun-hyung feels the heavy responsibility of carrying on the theater world, engraving Lee Soon-jae's words in his heart.

On the same broadcast, Park Geun-hyung also revealed his marital principles with his wife. He shared a rule that he never breaks, even when they argue. Married for 55 years, Park also recounted a story about forgetting an important event with his wife. He disclosed his secret tactic to avoid his wife's nagging, filling the studio with laughter.

In this way, Park Geun-hyung expressed both his longing for Lee Soon-jae and his love for his wife, deeply moving the viewers. His story reaffirmed the commitment to not forget the late's legacy and reminded everyone once again of the importance of family.
