Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young reunite after 10 years... 'If We' to be released on the 31st

Two couples challenging themselves with melodrama acting, Koo Kyo-hwan and Moon Ga-young, Cynthia and Chu Young-woo, revealed that "trusting the co-actor and breathing together" is the most important. They star in two melodrama films releasing one after another during the year-end and New Year holidays. These films are remakes of original works that were greatly loved in China and Japan, respectively.

The film "If We," releasing on the 31st, deals with the realistic romance of job-seeking people in their twenties. "Even If This Love Disappears Tonight in the World," which was released on the 24th, depicts the fresh first love of teenage high school students. "If We" begins with Eun-ho (Koo Kyo-hwan) and Jung-won (Moon Ga-young) coincidentally meeting on a plane ten years after their breakup. After visiting Vietnam for their respective work, the two spend a night together on the return flight due to bad weather.

"If We" is a remake of the Chinese film "Us in the Distant Future," using a reversed directing technique that portrays the present in black and white and past memories in color. Director Kim Do-young said, "We tried to keep the good points of the original," adding, "We struggled to coordinate the intersection between the present and the past."

The film goes back to the past with Jung-won and Eun-ho cheering for the Korean national team at the 2010 South Africa World Cup. Despite being in his 40s, Koo Kyo-hwan successfully expressed the freshness of his twenties. He said, "If you look at my lesser-known background, I was originally a master of melodrama," and revealed that he acted trusting the director and his co-actor.

Moon Ga-young, who moved viewers in the JTBC drama "Understanding of Love," chose a deep melodrama in this film as well. She said, "I wanted to seize the precious opportunity to capture my face in black and white," and shared that as filming progressed, the emotions of Eun-ho and Jung-won became genuine.

The film depicts the process of freshmen full of dreams facing frustration against the walls of reality. Their poor hearts obscure their original intention to do everything for each other, and hurtful words and actions eventually separate them. The present-day Eun-ho, while sharing old memories with Jung-won, receives a video call, and Jung-won curls up to hide her existence.

Moon Ga-young recalled, "The director also entrusted me with the blocking. I squatted behind the bed spontaneously, overwhelmed by misery and sadness." She explained, "Melodrama acting is all about choices," and said she discussed the moments of embrace and farewell with the director.

Both actors agreed that there were many unintended emotional ad-libs during filming. Moon Ga-young said, "Although Eun-ho becomes unpleasant in the story, Jung-won's love for him was thanks to the power of actor Koo Kyo-hwan." Koo Kyo-hwan responded, "All aspects of Eun-ho's character came from Ga-young and the director. If the audience feels like they are dating Eun-ho in real life, that is the greatest compliment."

If "If We" resembles the realistic romance of ordinary people, "Even If This Love Disappears Tonight in the World" portrays a high-teen romance. This film tells the story of two protagonists suffering from congenital heart disease and anterograde amnesia. Rising stars Chu Young-woo and Cynthia are shown enjoying a fresh date by the seaside in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, wearing school uniforms.

Director Kim Hye-young said, "I thought what is 'Korean' was not a remake for the sake of a remake, but capturing students spending ordinary school days amid Korea's beautiful scenery." He added that he tried to give a brighter impression than the original.
