The new SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'I Don't Want to Be Human' is set to premiere on January 16 at 9:50 PM. This drama deals with the chaotic salvation fantasy of an MZ nine-tailed fox who does not want to be human and a self-absorbed human. The story centers around the main characters, nine-tailed fox Eun-ho (played by Kim Hye-yoon) and soccer star Kang Si-yeol (played by Romon).
Eun-ho is a lifelong single nine-tailed fox who has experienced everything except for romance, and due to a single choice, she becomes entwined with Kang Si-yeol, whose fate has changed. Kim Hye-yoon returns to drama after a year and eight months since 'Jumping Over the Line,' while Romon has gained recognition among global viewers through 'All of Us Are Dead.' Their pairing is drawing viewers' anticipation.
Eun-ho is characterized as an MZ nine-tailed fox who does not want to become human. She avoids good deeds and only steers clear of major evils, but she gets involved in an incident that shakes her life. The nine-tailed fox is a mythical creature from Eastern legends, depicted in various forms across different content. 'I Don't Want to Be Human' reimagines this nine-tailed fox with new charm.
The drama's biggest distinguishing feature is the concept of 'a nine-tailed fox that does not want to be human.' Writers Park Chan-young and Jo Ah-young stated, "The reason the nine-tailed fox character has been frequently portrayed is that it is an alluring existence," adding, "The question of why an attractive nine-tailed fox always wants to become human is the starting point of this story." Through Eun-ho, they aim to depict a character who lives in the way she desires rather than conforming to societal standards.
In the drama, Eun-ho navigates the human world in her own way. She grants wishes that cannot be fulfilled by human abilities and receives payment in return, enjoying her unwavering youth and beauty as a nine-tailed fox. Director Kim Jeong-kwon explained, "While existing nine-tailed foxes had a scary image, our drama's nine-tailed fox is distinctive in that she is an 'MZ nine-tailed fox' who refuses to become human."
Writers Park Chan-young and Jo Ah-young described Eun-ho as a 'little devil' character who is whimsical, eccentric, and a bit of an anti-hero. They emphasized the charm of her inner kind and delicate side. This contradictory aspect is what makes Eun-ho most appealing.
This drama is expected to captivate viewers with its freshness that turns existing nine-tailed fox stories upside down. Kim Hye-yoon remarked, "Eun-ho's charm lies in her simplicity and ability to act," noting, "Since she is over 900 years old and possesses powers, I tried to use a more mature tone or commanding speech to convey her control over those around her."
'I Don't Want to Be Human' aims to continue the lineage of K-nine-tailed fox characters through a new transformation. The quirky yet lovable story of 'MZ nine-tailed fox' Eun-ho, portrayed by Kim Hye-yoon, serves as a core element of the drama. This show is preparing to approach viewers with a new perspective while revisiting existing nine-tailed fox narratives.
