The musical concert 'The Mission: K' uniquely tells the stories of missionaries who came to the land of Joseon. A press conference was held on the 5th at the Korea Press Center in Jung-gu, Seoul. Attendees included actors Kim Dong-jun, SF9 Jae-yoon, Astro MJ, Teen Top Ricky, music director and general producer Jang So-young, director Ahn Jin-seong, and writer Kim Eun-hye.
'The Mission: K' is a K-pop musical concert structured in a talk show format, featuring the stories of four historical figures: Allen, Underwood, Severance, and Avison. Astro MJ plays the role of Allen, while SF9 Jae-yoon takes on the role of Underwood. Teen Top Ricky plays Severance, and Kim Dong-jun portrays Avison. Musical actor Seo Beom-seok participates as the MC, guiding the narrative.
General producer Jang So-young stated, "This performance is a challenge of the blue-eyed missionaries in Joseon," explaining, "We aim to present their stories in a new format through talk, music, and dance. 'Mission' means a calling or duty, and 'K' symbolizes Korea, knowledge, kindness, and knock."
Writer Kim Eun-hye commented, "The four historical figures are truly famous. It is surprising to discover that such great people were active in this era. 140 years ago, it was the Joseon era, before modernization began," adding, "It is remarkable that they healed patients, trained doctors, and practiced education in a foreign land with no information."
Kim Dong-jun said, "He was a figure who established a quarantine system during the outbreak of cholera," noting, "He worked hard to train doctors, believing that Joseon needed medical professionals. I think I didn't know many great people like him."
MJ explained, "He was a person who contemplated his position in a foreign society and played a significant role in the development of modern medicine and the establishment of Jejungwon." He added, "Since it is in a concert format, I felt confident that I could utilize my idol experience. I learned a lot while studying the historical stories related to Severance."
Jae-yoon mentioned, "He was the founder of modern education who could convey learning in a new structure," expressing that "the message wanting to be conveyed is really good. I look forward to the unique 'audience participation' atmosphere where we can communicate with the audience."
Ricky stated, "He was a person for whom giving was life," and expressed, "I really liked working with the people. I am looking forward to the performance."
Director Ahn Jin-seong emphasized, "In the play, the missionaries made the best choices they could in their respective situations rather than having grand purposes," and mentioned, "We have prepared a space where these four actors can optimally showcase their talents while merging the strengths of both a concert and a musical for audience interaction."
General producer Jang So-young spoke about the starting point of the play, saying, "I thought it would be good to make a musical about Jejungwon, the first Western hospital in Joseon. It was an interesting subject, and it became clear that it was difficult to tell the story without mentioning the missionaries."
He explained, "As we talked about the stories of the four missionaries, we had to pay great attention to casting. The first criterion was character. We needed to portray missionaries, so they couldn't have bad character."
Kim Dong-jun added, "Each character came to Joseon in their early twenties by their own choice and gave many teachings. Within that heart, there must have been a spirit of challenge," stating, "The message I want to convey is for those standing before challenges or currently facing challenges to move forward together."
'The Mission: K' will perform four shows from January 30 to February 1 at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
