Actor Kwon Sang-woo returns to the screen after a year. His new film, Heartman, is scheduled to be released on January 14. Kwon Sang-woo is ready to meet audiences again through this work. Heartman is a comedy film in which the protagonist Seung-min, played by Kwon Sang-woo, struggles not to lose his first love Bona (played by Moon Chae-won). However, Seung-min carries a secret he can never tell her, which drives the story forward.
Heartman is the third collaboration between Kwon Sang-woo and director Choi Won-seop. The two previously worked together on Hitman and Hitman 2, which were very popular with audiences. Hitman attracted 2.4 million viewers, ranking among the top four Korean box office hits. The follow-up, Hitman 2, recorded 2.54 million viewers, achieving even greater success. The combination of Kwon Sang-woo and director Choi Won-seop has become a factor that earns the trust of audiences.
Kwon Sang-woo plays Seung-min, who was once the vocalist of the rock band Ambulance in Heartman. Now, he runs a musical instrument store and leads a quiet life. He completes a striking look with long hair and delivers a dense expression of various emotions, anchoring the story. Especially, Kwon Sang-woo sings "Flying Farther Than the Sun" himself in the ending scene, enhancing audience immersion.
Moon Chae-won plays Bona, Seung-min's first love, radiating warm eyes and bright energy. Park Ji-hwan and Pyo Ji-hoon also appear, creating diverse chemistry with Kwon Sang-woo and injecting vitality into the film. Director Choi Won-seop expressed his trust in Kwon's acting, saying, "Kwon Sang-woo is my persona. He is unique in the comedy genre, so I asked him to keep working together."
Kwon Sang-woo described Heartman as "a romantic extreme comedy film that becomes more varied due to an undisclosed fatal secret." Currently, Avatar: Fire and Ash and Zootopia 2 are aiming for 6 million and 9 million viewers respectively, while Heartman is drawing attention as the first Korean film to be released in 2026.
As Kwon Sang-woo's comedy film, Heartman is highly likely to perform well at the box office in January. Kwon has built public favor through his consistently physical comic acting and stable performances that broaden the audience's empathy with his characters. His comedic acting in this work is also expected to elicit positive responses from viewers.
This film will be an opportunity to revive the pride of Korean cinema. Attention is focused on whether the combination of Kwon Sang-woo and director Choi Won-seop will lead another box office success. Heartman is expected to offer audiences a unique fun and chemistry.
