Actress Choi Ji-woo meets audiences with the film "Sugar," which depicts a mother's journey to protect her son who has type 1 diabetes. The film is based on the miraculous true story of Mira, the mother played by Choi Ji-woo. "Sugar" tells the story of Mira, who creates medical devices herself for her young son suffering from type 1 diabetes.
Choi Ji-woo revealed, "There were many cautious aspects since I was portraying a real person." As a mother of a daughter, she deeply empathized with the emotions of how to protect a child more comfortably when she received the script. Choi Ji-woo added, "Rather, it was harder to hold back because I was worried those emotions might come out too strongly."
Go Dong-ha, who played Choi Ji-woo's son in the film, approached the shoot with a mature attitude. Choi Ji-woo praised him, saying, "Both of them were so comfortable and did well, which helped the acting." She said, "During breaks, he also played the piano and acted cute, which was very endearing."
Min Jin-woong took on the role of Jun-woo, Choi Ji-woo's husband, and worked closely with her. He shared, "It was an honor to work with a senior who has been a pillar of Korean melodrama." Despite an 11-year age difference, the two reportedly had perfect chemistry on set. Choi Ji-woo said, "Min Jin-woong made the set fun, and watching his back-and-forth with the child made me laugh, so the filming atmosphere was never awkward."
The three maintained a close relationship, even taking time after filming to meet and take sticker photos as props. Min Jin-woong said, "I learned a lot of elementary school slang from Dong-ha," sharing the lively atmosphere on set filled with laughter.
The film "Sugar" is expected to bring emotion to theaters early this year. Choi Ji-woo conveyed a message to the audience, saying, "I hope it will be a warm film that allows people to realize the preciousness of everyday life once again."
