The Extreme Crew arrived in Greenland ahead of the Arctic Polar Circle Marathon. In the seventh episode of MBC's "Extreme84," which aired on January 11, the Extreme Crew was shown beginning their serious journey toward their final challenge, the Arctic. Upon arriving in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, the Extreme Crew faced the Russell Glacier firsthand, fully realizing the gravity of the Arctic race. This scene recorded a peak viewership rating of 5.9%, leaving a strong impression on viewers. The 2054 demographic rating rose to 2.1% compared to the previous week, and the household rating was 3.8%. (Nielsen Korea, metropolitan area standard)
The Extreme Crew reached Copenhagen, Denmark, the first gateway to the Arctic, and held a surprise party to celebrate Kian84's birthday. Kwon Hwa-woon and Kangnam experienced unexpected mishaps while preparing the birthday table but ultimately succeeded in hosting the party. Kian84 appeared in his underwear, eliciting laughter, and expressed gratitude while tasting seaweed soup prepared by his younger siblings.
Afterward, the Extreme Crew ran through downtown Copenhagen with a running crew boasting over 20,000 members worldwide. They experienced the joy of running and traveling along routes connecting streets reminiscent of medieval Europe, pastel-colored harbors, palaces, and parks. Kian84 enjoyed a "rain run" amid birthday celebrations from morning and the beauty of Copenhagen, showing a contented expression.
However, the mood of the Extreme Crew changed abruptly at the expo site where they went to receive their race bibs. Unlike a typical expo, participants appeared tense, fully aware of the weight of the Arctic marathon. When the course was introduced, starting with a 10km stretch of ice and featuring rugged terrain, Kian84 gave a wry smile, looking perplexed. Kangnam, attempting his first marathon ever, also showed signs of bewilderment.
At the expo, Kian84 reunited with an Australian runner he had run with in the Big 5 Marathon. Putting aside tension for a moment, they exchanged warm greetings, recalling their shared finish line experience. Kwon Hwa-woon expressed his competitive spirit by saying, "I will win first place in the Arctic," upon hearing that his rival, an Australian athlete who had won first place in the South African Big 5 Marathon, would not be participating.
After a long journey, the Extreme Crew arrived in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, the venue for the Arctic Marathon. They faced the airport surrounded by snowy mountains, frozen land, and the Arctic landscape under brief sunlight. On their first schedule, the Extreme Crew went on a glacier exploration, captivated by musk oxen, reindeer, and beautiful lakes, showing their fascination with the Arctic's nature. Kian84 said, "This is the place I like the most among all the places I've been to so far."
But the admiration was short-lived. The endless uphill climbs and deepening cold encountered during the glacier exploration brought the Extreme Crew back to reality. Kian84 and Kwon Hwa-woon could not hide their bewilderment, and Kangnam's exhausted appearance on the path, which was difficult even to walk, added to the sympathy. When they finally faced the Russell Glacier directly, the Extreme Crew was left speechless by its overwhelming scale. The great outdoors gave them both hope and fear, fully conveying the weight of the Arctic race they would soon face.
The Extreme Crew's final race can be seen on MBC's "Extreme84," airing every Sunday at 9:10 PM.
