Actor Kwon Sang-woo has returned with the movie "Heartman." "Heartman" tells the story of a man named Seung-min who struggles to hold on to his first love. This film is based on the Argentine director Ariel Winograd's work "No Kids." Kwon Sang-woo said, "Although it is promoted as a comedy film, personally, I want to introduce it as an entertaining romance movie."
"Heartman" ranked number one in advance ticket sales for Korean films ahead of its release. On the opening day, the 14th, it maintained the top spot in ticket reservations among films released at the same time, drawing high expectations from the audience. Kwon Sang-woo is captivating viewers through his third collaboration with director Choi Won-seop. Their first project, the "Hitman" series, energized theaters by surpassing 2 million viewers for two consecutive films.
Kwon Sang-woo stated, "As I worked repeatedly with the director, a natural back-and-forth developed," and added, "He accepted the ideas I suggested with an open mind." He proposed using Eve's classic song "Lover" during the early performance scene in the film, and the director incorporated it.
In the film, Kwon Sang-woo plays Seung-min, a man who harbors a secret in front of his first love. He pursues rhythmical laughter arising from situations and characters rather than exaggerated setups. Kwon Sang-woo emphasized, "It is an attractive work because it is a comedy where a familiar love story and an undisclosed secret are intricately intertwined." He argued that the comedy genre deserves more recognition and added that an actor's expressiveness is key.
The biggest highlight of "Heartman" is Kwon Sang-woo's comedic acting. He has proven the formula for comedy success through the "Hitman" and "Detective" series and earned the nickname "Kwon Sang-woo-style comedy." Regarding this, he humbly responded, "I still have a long way to go." While grateful for gaining a cheerful image, he also expressed a thirst for acting.
"Heartman" stars Moon Chae-won, Park Ji-hwan, and Pyo Ji-hoon. Kwon Sang-woo shared that he felt tension in the romantic chemistry with Moon Chae-won and said her profound acting was a great help. He also praised the delicate chemistry with Park Ji-hwan and looked forward to working together again.
Since beginning his acting career in 2001, Kwon Sang-woo has won the public's love through significant works such as "My Tutor Friend," "Once Upon a Time in High School," and "Stairway to Heaven." He said, "We must not remain in past glory," paying attention to changes in the theater environment. He added, "I am grateful just to be able to act at the center of a project nowadays."
Marking his 25th year since debut, Kwon Sang-woo continues to be active in various genres including romance, action, and comedy. He still feels a thirst for acting and regrets the lack of communication among actors. He said, "I think I am still lacking and have much to fill."
Kwon Sang-woo attracted attention for his sincere promotion during the "Hitman" stage greeting. He believes that promotion is part of an actor's role as much as filming and tries to attend stage greetings beyond official schedules. He said, "It is truly a big deal that people come to the theater, so I want to express my gratitude."
The movie "Heartman" is currently showing in theaters nationwide.
