Shin Woo-hyun, nephew of Chairman Chung Eui-sun, takes flight 120 to challenge F3 racing

The daily life of Shin Woo-hyun, the nephew of Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun and the only FIA Formula 3 driver in Korea, was revealed through a broadcast. On the January 17 episode of MBC variety show "The Manager," a day at Shin Woo-hyun's home in Korea was depicted. He stated that during the season, he rarely comes to Korea and only stays briefly in the off-season. Shin Woo-hyun explained, "I take a lot of flights. This year alone, I have flown about 120 times."

Shin Woo-hyun started filming just 13 hours after returning from France. Right after waking up, he weighed himself and moved to his personal training room, where he began training while wearing his helmet. Yang Se-hyung admired the size of Shin Woo-hyun's training room, saying, "There is a stairway to hell inside the house." Shin Woo-hyun was meticulous about his diet, preparing meals separately from his mother, Jung Yoon. He emphasized, "Even gaining just 1 kg can make a 1 to 2-second difference at the end of a race," showing how he checks calories and food weight.

After eating, Shin Woo-hyun moved to a room filled with racing equipment, where he focused on studying races by analyzing onboard footage and data. Born in 2004, Shin Woo-hyun is known as the nephew of Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun. His mother, Jung Yoon, is the third sister of Chung Eui-sun and the third daughter of Honorary Chairman Chung Mong-koo. Although he comes from a family that attracts attention in the business world, Shin Woo-hyun is challenging the F3 stage with the determination to prove himself through his own results in the world of formula racing, not by his family name.

Shin Woo-hyun also explained the income structure in F3. He said, "The prize money for winning F1 is 200 billion won, and the annual salary is about 800 to 900 billion won. F3 has no income. The only racing where you get paid is F1." The cost to participate in an F3 race is equivalent to the price of a compact car, and expenses are covered either through sponsors or personally. He added that even in lower-level competitions, prize money is only about 2 to 3 million won.

Shin Woo-hyun also mentioned the penalty rules in racing. He explained, "Since all sounds are broadcasted, if you curse, you can be fined up to 100 million won. Also, if you are late, you have to pay 3 million won." During the broadcast, Lee Young-ja jokingly suggested, "Jeon Hyun-moo should sponsor you," which brought laughter.

Regarding his weight management, Shin Woo-hyun said, "The driver's weight must be the same as the car's. If the driver is lighter than the regulation, lead must be added to the car to make up the difference, so it can be used strategically." He even makes custom seats depending on weight changes and emphasized, "Later, a 1 kg difference can mean a 1 to 2-second difference."

Referring to his experience of flying about 120 times last year, Shin Woo-hyun asked his mother, "Mom, have you ever done something in your life where you really focused and gave it your all?" He said, "I never thought I had to study hard, but through racing, I am dedicating my entire life to it for the first time." His mother expressed affection, saying, "I see that you have put your life on the line in every race."

Shin Woo-hyun's mother spoke about their Hyundai family background, saying, "Since Shin Woo-hyun has grown a lot in four years, some people think he came this far easily because of his parents' background. It's true that he was lucky to get help from his parents to reach this point, but I hope people recognize that he has put in tremendous effort himself."

Shin Woo-hyun hopes to continue focusing on racing and be recognized for his skills. His mother urged, "These days, racing drivers can't succeed by ability alone. It's also important to become famous as a racer. If many people give Shin Woo-hyun a lot of love and attention, he will be able to grow even more. I hope you will support him."
