BTS is resuming their world tour after four years. Following this news, the global fandom 'ARMY' is actively mobilizing. Immediately after the announcement of the concert schedule, searches for flights to Korea and accommodations surged, once again proving the 'performance-driven tourism' effect centered on K-pop.
The BTS world tour schedule was released on January 13. According to data from the global online travel platform Hotels.com, overseas travel searches with Korea as the destination surged within 48 hours after the announcement. Seoul and Busan led the main search demand. Inbound search volume for Seoul increased by 155%, while Busan recorded an unprecedented surge of 2375%. This reflects the movement of global fans visiting Korea to see BTS's comeback stage in person.
The increase in search volume is analyzed to reflect interest from the Asian market centered on Japan and the North American region. Japan's search volume increased by 400%, showing the highest growth rate, followed by Taiwan at 260%, Hong Kong at 170%, and the United States at 95%. In the case of Busan, despite only two concert dates being announced, searches from Japan surged by an overwhelming 15,450%. Hong Kong showed a 7100% increase, Taiwan 1275%, and the United States 835%. It is also analyzed that in some countries, accommodation searches led to a 'click competition' phenomenon.
This phenomenon represents a new consumption trend combining music and travel. According to Hotels.com's travel trend report, so-called 'Tour Tourism,' traveling for concerts or music events, is spreading. The survey results showed that 70% of respondents expressed greater interest in traveling for the purpose of attending performances, and 43% said they were willing to leave their city or country of residence to see their favorite artist's stage.
Domestic travel demand also increased. Within 48 hours after the tour schedule announcement, domestic travel searches toward Seoul increased by 190% compared to the previous week, and Busan surged by 3855%. This phenomenon suggests that the BTS world tour is playing the role of a 'cultural tourism catalyst,' positively impacting the regional economy beyond being a simple concert event.
An industry insider said, "Large-scale live performances are becoming a decisive factor in choosing travel destinations," adding, "It can be confirmed by the numbers that K-pop as cultural content is a powerful driving force simultaneously leading inbound and domestic travel." The BTS world tour is establishing itself as an important element that goes beyond a simple concert to lead the convergence of culture and economy.
