Legal drama craze... 'Pro Bono' and 'Judge Lee Han-young' ratings soaring

The popularity of courtroom dramas continues. Many courtroom dramas that received much love last year are scheduled to air one after another this year as well. The narrative of justice prevailing in the courtroom setting provides viewers with strong immersion. Amid this trend, various courtroom dramas are attracting viewers.

JTBC's "Esquire: Lawyers Dreaming of Becoming Lawyers" and tvN's "Seocho-dong," which aired last year, were praised for realistically depicting the daily lives and growth of lawyers. These dramas proved that courtroom dramas remain a genre that resonates with many viewers.

The tvN drama "Pro Bono," which premiered earlier this year, tells the story of a public interest lawyer. The drama portrays the chaotic events that unfold when a materialistic judge dreaming of success accidentally becomes a public interest lawyer. Jung Kyung-ho and So Joo-yeon, who play the main characters Kang Da-wit and Park Ki-ppeum, respectively, delivered passionate performances as public interest lawyers providing free legal services to marginalized groups. "Pro Bono" started with a 4.5% viewership rating for its first episode and successfully concluded with a 10.0% rating for its final episode.

MBC's Friday-Saturday drama "Judge Lee Han-young" stars actor Ji Sung. The drama tells the story of a judge who lived as a slave to a giant law firm and goes back 10 years to pursue justice. "Judge Lee Han-young" is based on a webtoon of the same name and is noted as Ji Sung's return to MBC. Starting with a 4.3% rating for the first episode, the drama has received positive reviews, rising to 11.0% by episode 6.

The drama "Honor," which deals with the solidarity of female lawyers, is also gaining attention. It tells the story of three female lawyers tracking a mystery while confronting past scandals. Starring Lee Na-young, Jung Eun-chae, and Lee Chung-ah, it is based on a Swedish drama. The production team stated that "Honor" focuses on the questions that remain even after legal judgments. The drama will premiere on February 2.

The K-courtroom drama craze continues on OTT platforms as well. Disney+ announced that it will release a new original series, "Bloody Flower," on February 4. This drama revolves around characters surrounding a serial killer who has the ability to cure all incurable diseases. It depicts the situation where the standards of law and ethics are shaken due to the existence of the serial killer Lee Woo-gyeom. The protagonist Park Han-joon must defend Lee Woo-gyeom, while Cha Yi-yeon stops at nothing to achieve success. The drama consists of a total of eight episodes.
