Singer Yoo Yeol revealed his recent condition after battling pulmonary fibrosis and undergoing a lung transplant surgery. On the 24th, Yoo Yeol candidly shared stories about his married life with his wife and his family on MBN's "Kim Juha's Day and Night."
Yoo Yeol explained his early married life, saying, "As an only son, I got married at 50. I set up my new household right next door to my mother." He said he greeted his mother every morning and, after exercising, ate three meals a day with his wife at his mother's house. The cast expressed surprise at his story, and Yoo Yeol said, "Looking back now, I was not really myself in the early days of marriage."
He revealed that his wife felt lonely at the beginning of their marriage. His wife confessed, "I thought he was on my side, but it felt like he was on someone else's side, so I was very lonely." Pregnant at the time of marriage, she shocked viewers by admitting, "I thought I would just be good to my husband for three months and then leave."
Yoo Yeol returned to broadcasting seven years after being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. He explained his opening performance, saying, "I felt that returning through singing was the proper way as a singer." Yoo Yeol shared his health condition, stating, "All transplant patients are vulnerable to viruses." The production team wore masks out of consideration for Yoo Yeol.
He said, "In 2019, I had pneumonia, and the test results diagnosed me with pulmonary fibrosis," adding, "There is still no cure, only medication that slows the progression." Yoo Yeol's weight dropped to 47 kg, and he also mentioned the time when death rumors circulated about him. He explained, "People around me got angry and had that article taken down."
Yoo Yeol revealed that he later settled all his affairs and lived in Jeju for a year.
During the broadcast, Yoo Yeol also shared a piece written by his son. His son attends a Christian school and writes a testimony every year. Yoo Yeol said his son refused to present because he did not want to share his father's painful story in front of his friends. Reading his son's writing aloud, Yoo Yeol conveyed, "Last May, Dad caught the flu and was hospitalized. We thought he would recover in a week, but he stayed in the hospital for over a month, and Mom said Dad needed a lung transplant."
His son wrote, "The surgery looked so dangerous that I was scared," and "From that day, for a month, I went to early morning worship with Mom and prayed every day, 'Please save Dad. Let him play soccer and travel the world with me.'" Yoo Yeol said he prevented his son from visiting the hospital, worried that he might be shocked.
Yoo Yeol also shared that his son asked about the success rate of the surgery and said he wanted to see him just once before the operation. Yoo Yeol was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2017 and has endured a long battle with the disease. Pulmonary fibrosis is a condition where inflammation repeatedly occurs in the lungs, causing tissue to harden. Since there is no cure, he has been receiving medication to slow symptom progression.
His condition worsened, and his weight dropped to the 40 kg range, with death rumors circulating at one point. In 2024, his condition rapidly deteriorated due to the flu, requiring intensive care treatment. After undergoing lung transplant surgery the same year, he is now focusing on recovery. This broadcast appearance was his first update since the lung transplant and marked his return to broadcasting after seven years, drawing significant attention.
