Actor Kim Seon-ho has once again revealed his passion for acting. Through the drama "Does This Love Interpret?" released on the 16th, he returned to the romance genre after five years. In this work, Kim Seon-ho played the role of Ju Hojin, a multilingual interpreter, portraying a love story with global top star Cha Muhee, played by Go Yoon-jung. Ju Hojin has a somewhat blunt personality but expresses sincere love by embracing another personality, "Dorami," which embodies Cha Muhee's wounds. This captivated the hearts of women worldwide.
To prepare for the role of an interpreter fluent in six languages, Kim Seon-ho practiced countless lines in various languages such as Italian and Japanese and underwent vocal training. Additionally, the chemistry with Go Yoon-jung, who is ten years younger, highlighted the excitement of the romance in the drama. As of the 21st, the drama recorded 4 million views on Netflix and ranked second in the 'Global Top 10' non-English show category.
In a recent interview at a café in Seoul, Kim Seon-ho said, "I don't know how happy I am to receive so much support and interest both domestically and internationally. I vividly remember the audition day for KBS 2TV's 'Chief Kim' in 2017. I try not to forget the feelings I had then. I'm still happy to be able to act."
Regarding his feelings about releasing "Does This Love Interpret?", he said, "I really enjoyed preparing for this drama. All the actors and production staff were waiting for the drama to be released. I was curious and excited about what kind of reactions would come. I didn't expect the drama's performance to be this good." He added that he had been busy preparing for the play "Secret Passage" recently, so he hadn't checked the ratings often.
About the pressure of returning to a romance drama after five years since "Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha" (2021), Kim Seon-ho explained, "When choosing a work, I usually think first about empathy with the audience or viewers and the acting method. I don't worry about the genre. I was attracted to 'Does This Love Interpret?' because it shows interpreting not only languages but also emotions as an interpreter." He emphasized that he had enjoyed the previous works of writer Hong Ja and really wanted to do this project.
On the difference between romance acting and other genres, he said, "The way of expression is different. Romantic feelings exist in everyone's heart. On the other hand, noir genres often require study because you don't experience them in real life. Romance needs to be expressed more delicately and with difficulty but in a universal way." He said he put a lot of thought into portraying Ju Hojin and paid attention to gestures and costumes.
Regarding the preparation process for the interpreter role, he said, "The role was really difficult. I had to be proficient in the languages. I repeatedly practiced the lines and learned by listening to language teachers acting them out. It was hard at first, but as the emotions accumulated, the timing matched." He shared that while acting in Italian, he enjoyed recognizing words he heard locally.
About the difficulties of overseas filming, he said, "Adjusting to the time difference was tough. Especially when filming the aurora scene, I fell asleep as if fainting, and Go Yoon-jung called me shouting, 'The aurora is out!' At first, I didn't believe it, but when I opened my eyes, it was truly spectacular."
On understanding the romance with Cha Muhee in the drama, Kim Seon-ho said, "I didn't think about whether I could accept Cha Muhee. Like all roles, once you think you can't empathize, there's a limit to expression." He added that Cha Muhee was lovely, and Ju Hojin must have felt relieved when Dorami appeared.
Some viewers had mixed feelings about the character Ju Hojin. Regarding this, Kim Seon-ho explained, "Some parts of Ju Hojin were frustrating even while acting. This character is the complete opposite of me. I tend to speak softly to resolve conflicts, but Ju Hojin is inexperienced in expressing his emotions." He added that he discussed Ju Hojin several times with the production team while reading the script.
About Cha Muhee's character being caught up in privacy issues as a top star, he said, "I didn't apply my own situation while acting. I tried to faithfully express what was in the script." He emphasized that as an actor, he is aware of being judged by the public and tries his best.
Regarding his chemistry with partner Go Yoon-jung, he said, "It was awkward during the early shoots, but I got a lot of help during filming in Canada. We teased each other and became close. We formed a family-like atmosphere with all the staff and happily filmed." He said it felt strange when they parted at the end.
When asked if he ever felt fluttering during filming with Go Yoon-jung, he replied, "Go Yoon-jung is a very lovely style on set. She teases me, but even that is adorable." He said he was impressed by her excellent acting sense.
On how he would react if he met someone as proactive in love as Cha Muhee, Kim Seon-ho said, "When I was younger, I wondered if I should follow if the other person was proactive. Now, it takes a long time for me to open my heart. It's important that our conversation styles and interests match and that communication flows well." He added that he is actually a shy type.
When asked about the positive feedback on his voice through this role, Kim Seon-ho said, "I started with theater and thought my voice projection was okay, but in front of the camera, I felt the need to convey more delicately. I decided to change my vocalization and practiced." He emphasized that in this role, as an interpreter, he focused on conveying the message.
Kim Seon-ho has been active on the theater stage since 2009 and debuted in dramas with KBS 2TV's "Chief Kim" in 2017. On how things have changed since becoming a star, he said, "I try not to forget the feelings I had during the audition. I have goals and concerns as an actor, but I don't have a moment where I think about where I stand as a star." He added that he is still happy to be able to act.
