The comeback of the group BTS is having a powerful ripple effect across the cultural industry beyond the K-pop sector. BTS is preparing to release their first album after the end of their military hiatus, and their comeback is causing various economic impacts.
According to their agency Big Hit Music, all seats for BTS's world tour 'ARIRANG' (WORLD TOUR 'ARIRANG') in North America and Europe have been sold out. BTS will start their world tour on April 9 at Goyang Sports Complex, and all seats for the three shows (April 9, 11, and 12) in Goyang were sold out during the presale period alone.
Within 48 hours after the tour schedule was announced, travel searches to Seoul from overseas increased by 155% compared to the previous week. In the case of Busan, the increase in search volume reached 2375%. During the same period, domestic travel searches for Seoul and Busan increased by 190% and 3855%, respectively. BTS's tour will take place in 82 shows across 34 cities worldwide, which is expected to have a significant impact on the tourism industry.
Pop culture critic Kim Heon-sik said, "Thanks to each BTS member continuing their individual activities, the team's presence has grown even stronger during the long hiatus," adding, "The economic effects and public response will be even more intense after the comeback." BTS's comeback is also being compared to pop singer Taylor Swift's 'Eras Tour.' The 'Eras Tour' increased demand for accommodation, dining, and transportation in every city where it was held, creating the new term 'Swiftonomics.'
The British media outlet The Guardian reported that BTS's comeback is a global event that could have a major impact on the economies of cities across North America. Foreign media such as the BBC forecast that BTS will generate sales worth $1 billion (approximately 1.45 trillion KRW) through ancillary businesses related to their comeback activities. Domestic securities firms have raised their target stock price for HYBE to as high as 450,000 KRW, focusing on the potential improvement in the company's performance.
BTS's resumption of activities is expected to revitalize the overall K-pop market, which has been in a slump. BTS's return could serve as a catalyst for annual album sales to recover to the 100 million mark. In particular, BTS's comeback performance scheduled for March 21 at Gwanghwamun Square is highly symbolic, as it prominently features the meeting of 'K-Heritage' and 'K-pop.'
Critic Kim explained, "Choosing to hold a concert at Gwanghwamun immediately after the album release is a strategy not only to show consideration for domestic fans but also to gather global attention toward Korea and K-culture." He added that BTS's album title 'Arirang' emphasizes Korean identity and that their activities will have a positive impact on spreading Korea's traditional culture and K-culture.
BTS's comeback is regarded as an important event that goes beyond simple musical activities, accompanying the global spread of Korean culture and economic effects. They have established themselves as symbols of K-pop and continue to expand their influence on the global cultural industry. BTS's world tour and album release are attracting great interest not only from K-pop fans but also from the general public, and this is expected to bring positive changes to Korea's cultural industry as a whole.
