The SBS current affairs program "Unanswered Questions" will investigate the truth behind a confinement and assault case that occurred in a rural village in its 1474th episode airing on January 31, titled "Wealthy Man and Shaman, Dangerous Symbiosis." This episode will conduct an in-depth investigation into the horrific incident experienced by an elderly woman in her 80s and the people behind it.
On April 8 of last year, a woman caught the attention of residents in a rural village in Yeoncheon County, Gyeonggi Province. The victim, an 80-year-old woman named Jung Geum-ja (pseudonym), asked for help to be taken in a car. Her condition was severe, and after being transported to the hospital, bruises were found all over her body, along with fractures to her face and ribs. Jung testified that she was confined for a week at her son's house before barely escaping.
The person identified as the perpetrator was Jung's 29-year-old grandson. The grandson, Go Sun-woo (pseudonym), made a shocking statement: "Grandmother is a sinner. If this continues, she will truly go to hell." It is known that he was confined while visiting Yeoncheon to see his grandmother. Although he had previously cared for his ailing grandmother with devotion, the reason for the assault remains unclear. The grandson has remained silent and refused family visits while detained in the detention center.
In the first trial, the grandson was sentenced to three years in prison on charges including special confinement and injury to a lineal ascendant. He spoke little throughout the trial but later sent a letter to his family admitting his wrongdoing while confessing that he committed the crime out of fear of threats. The letter included the statement, "The threats from Pyo ᄋᄋ and Park ᄆᄆ were truly frightening. I was afraid that if I told the truth, I would be harmed or even killed for betrayal."
The individuals mentioned in the letter are a 40-year-old shaman named Park and her lover, Pyo (pseudonym), a man in his 50s known to come from a wealthy family. However, both deny Go Sun-woo's claims as untrue. Questions have been raised about who these people are and how they are connected to the confinement and assault case. A dispute over the truth continues regarding whether there was planning and collusion beyond a simple case of familial crime, as the grandson alleges.
"Unanswered Questions" plans to conduct an in-depth investigation into the truth behind the case and the relationships involved. Various aspects related to the full story of the incident are expected to be revealed through the program.
