Derogatory remarks about BTS on Mexican TV broadcasts have sparked controversy. On February 4th (local time), the entertainment program "Chismoleo" aired on Mexico's Multimedios Channel 6 addressed public reactions to the unfairness of ticket reservations for BTS's Mexico City concert. On the show, panelists mentioned issues such as undisclosed seat arrangements, unclear fee structures, and indications of premeditated ticket resales, while expressing the opinion that price increases for tickets to popular concerts are a natural phenomenon.
Panelist Fabian Labaye said, "If I had a 17-year-old daughter, I would make her do homework," adding, "This is not the time to be crying over some unknown singer's concert." During this remark, photos and videos of BTS were displayed on the TV screen. The host intervened, saying, "Many kids dream of seeing BTS in person," but another panelist, Fernanda, continued with a critical comment, "I guarantee that half of the fans haven't even properly finished elementary school but still want to go to the concert."
The panelists' attitudes toward BTS and their fans caused significant backlash within Mexico. The BTS fandom, known as "ARMY," posted comments criticizing the panelists on the broadcast clip. Fans responded with remarks such as, "It's a thousand times better for my daughter to listen to BTS than songs by singers who curse at women or songs about women crying over men," "An example of jealousy toward a global artist," and "A pure gossip program that contributes nothing positive to society."
Fans also posted messages proudly verifying their education and occupations to emphasize that BTS fans are not just teenagers. They mentioned various professions such as "holder of a master's degree in tax law," "surgeon," and "biotechnologist," highlighting that BTS fans are diverse and accomplished individuals.
BTS's world tour concerts in Mexico City are scheduled to take place from May 7th and from the 9th to the 10th. Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum reportedly sent a letter to President Lee Jae-myung requesting "more concert support." She stated that she received a reply expressing "deep gratitude for the interest in BTS and that the production company was also informed."
This controversy is seen as an example that negative perceptions of BTS and their fans still exist. Fans emphasize that BTS is a globally recognized artist and argue that their music and message have a positive impact. This situation is expected to further strengthen BTS's global recognition and the unity of their fandom.
