Controversial remark on local broadcast before BTS Mexico concert: "ARMY is at elementary school level"

A Mexican entertainment news program has sparked controversy by making derogatory remarks about the group BTS and their fandom, 'ARMY.' The program aired at the end of last month, and the participants discussed ticket prices and the sold-out status of BTS's world tour concert in Mexico City.

One of the hosts, Fabian Lavaye, said, "If I had a 17-year-old daughter, I wouldn't let her go to the concert. She should just stay home and do her homework." He belittled BTS's performance, saying, "This is not the time to be crying over concerts by unknown singers." In response, co-host Yvonne Chavez rebutted, emphasizing, "Don't belittle the dreams of teenagers. For many kids, seeing BTS in person is a big dream."

However, another host, Fernanda, mocked the fans by saying, "I guarantee that half of the fans probably didn't even finish elementary school." This remark caused a major uproar on social media immediately after the broadcast. BTS fans responded by revealing their educational backgrounds and professions. They include various professionals such as engineers, naval medical officers, veterinarians, and lawyers, and shared their records of master's and doctoral studies to refute the hosts' claims.

Fans expressed strong opposition to the hosts' remarks, conveying messages like, "Thanks to BTS member RM's advice, I did not give up on my studies." They also criticized, "Those who talk about elementary school, what have they actually contributed to society?"

BTS is scheduled to perform at Mexico City's GNP Seguros Stadium on May 7, 9, and 10. In relation to this, Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico City, requested President Lee Jae-myung to allow additional BTS concerts.

This controversy has drawn attention as an example revealing the persistent prejudice and discrimination that exist despite BTS and their fans becoming a global cultural phenomenon. BTS represents Korea as artists, enjoying immense popularity worldwide, and their fandom includes people of various ages and professions.

BTS's music and messages have a positive impact on many, and fans strive to achieve their dreams through their activities. The fans' rebuttal went beyond merely responding to derogatory remarks; it became an opportunity to highlight BTS's global influence and the diverse backgrounds of their fans.

This incident occurred at a time when understanding and respect for culture and art are needed, and it is expected that interest will continue to focus on the activities BTS and their fans will show in the future.
