Kim Gu-ra's son Gree appears on 'Radio Star' on the day of his discharge... Marine Corps "Pre-approved"

Rapper Gree, the son of broadcaster Kim Gura, sparked controversy over a violation of military law by appearing on MBC's entertainment program "Radio Star" on the day of his discharge from the Marine Corps. Gree participated in the broadcast recording about four hours after being discharged on January 28. In response, the Marine Corps stated that prior approval had been obtained.

On the 5th, the Marine Corps explained, "This was done with the unit's approval in accordance with the Defense Public Relations Directive." They also added, "Reserve Sergeant Kim Dong-hyun appeared on the broadcast following normal procedures, fully aware that he was still on active duty on the day of the recording."

"Radio Star" aired a special program on the 4th, featuring guests Gree, Kim Won-jun, Jo Hye-ryeon, and Hanhae. The recording took place on January 28, during which Gree appeared in military uniform and reported his discharge. He said, "Proud Republic of Korea Ghost-Catching Marine Blue Dragon Sergeant Kim Dong-hyun has completed 549 days of military service from July 29, 2024, to January 28, 2026, and has been ordered to return to the loving arms of his parents."

Some online communities raised claims that Gree's appearance on the show violated military law. According to Article 159 of the Civil Act, soldiers are prohibited from engaging in profit-making activities and become civilians the day after their discharge. This led to suspicions that Gree's participation in the broadcast recording on his discharge day, January 28, was against regulations.

The Marine Corps clearly denied these allegations. An official stated, "The Marine Corps confirmed that the broadcast appearance was conducted with prior approval from the unit," emphasizing, "He appeared following proper procedures."

Gree enlisted in July 2024 and served in the Marine Corps' 2nd Division Artillery Brigade. During his service, he was recognized for exemplary military conduct, selected as a model marine, and awarded certificates for outstanding facility and environmental management. Gree also attracted attention by sharing related certification photos.

This incident sparked discussions about the boundaries between military law and broadcast appearances. Regulations prohibit active-duty soldiers from engaging in profit-making activities, restricting their conduct during service. However, the Marine Corps clarified that Gree's broadcast appearance was pre-approved to dispel suspicions of military law violations.

Since Gree's broadcast appearance occurred immediately after his discharge, attention is focused on his activities following the completion of his military service. Broadcaster Kim Gura congratulated his son Gree on his discharge, explaining, "He was discharged today (at 9 a.m.)." This shows the significant impact of Gree's discharge on the broadcast.

In conclusion, although Gree's appearance on the broadcast on the day of his discharge sparked controversy over military law violations, legitimacy was secured through prior approval from the Marine Corps. This incident opened a platform for discussions regarding the relationship between the military and broadcasting.
