Actress Hwang Jung-eum shared news about herself approximately three months after her period of self-reflection. On the 12th, Hwang Jung-eum posted a photo of toys on her Instagram story with the phrase "Free toy giveaway." The revealed photo showed various toys piled up in what is presumed to be Hwang Jung-eum's yard. She announced, "Feel free to take the toys that my child used cleanly." Some furniture was also visible in front of the photo, arousing curiosity.
Hwang Jung-eum was involved in controversy last May over allegations of embezzlement of company funds. In early 2022, her company, in which she held 100% ownership, took out a loan and used 700 million won as temporary payments to invest in cryptocurrency. Subsequently, she was indicted without detention on charges of embezzling 4.34 billion won of company funds until December 2022. Hwang Jung-eum repaid the entire amount used as temporary payments by disposing of her personal assets in two installments on May 30 and June 5 last year. She admitted to the embezzlement charges and has been spending time in self-reflection.
Hwang Jung-eum practiced sharing by giving away her child's toys for free to families in need. On the 12th, she posted on her social media, "Giving away toys for free. These are toys my child used cleanly. If you need them, please feel free to take them," along with photos of the toys. The photos showed a pile of various toys such as dinosaur dolls, car models, and robots, attracting attention. Hwang Jung-eum announced that the sharing event would be held in Itaewon, Seoul, from the 13th to the 15th.
In the first trial, Hwang Jung-eum was sentenced to two years in prison with a four-year probation for embezzling about 4.3 billion won from a one-person agency in which she held 100% ownership. Her side did not appeal, so the first trial verdict was finalized. According to the prosecution, from July to October 2022, Hwang Jung-eum invested about 4.2 billion won out of 4.36 billion won of company funds in cryptocurrency over 13 occasions, and some of the money was used for tax payments and other purposes. In court, her side admitted all charges and reportedly repaid the full amount of damages.
Reactions to Hwang Jung-eum's free toy giveaway event were mixed. On the 12th, she posted on her personal account, "Giving away toys for free. These are toys my child used cleanly. If you need them, please feel free to take them," along with photos of the toys. The photos included information about the free giveaway event. The location was Itaewon, and the schedule was from the 13th to the 15th, from 12 PM to 7 PM each day.
However, online criticism arose regarding the condition and display method of the toys in the photos. Various toys such as robots, fire trucks, dinosaur figures, police car models, and helicopters were spread out without being organized, becoming the center of controversy. Some netizens expressed negative reactions such as, "At least sort them and show them in a clean room or living room," "They look like waste," and "It would have been better if they were neatly displayed."
Despite the good intention of Hwang Jung-eum's sharing event, criticism about the method continued. Netizens commented, "It's a sharing event with good intentions, but the method is really disappointing. The recipients are valuable individuals, but the way the toys are piled on the floor like trash shows a lack of consideration."
Hwang Jung-eum has been striving to fulfill her social responsibilities during her period of self-reflection, and this free toy giveaway event is part of that effort. She chose this event as her first opportunity to communicate with the public after her self-reflection. It appears that Hwang Jung-eum plans to restore her image through various social contributions in the future.
